As always the Virgin Active London Triathlon attracts plenty of familiar faces among the 13,000 or so competitors. Last we week we highlighted some of the celebrities taking part this year, and here are a few images from across the weekend of some of those that took part.

One of the themes of the Virgin Active London Triathlon this year was 'inspirational women', and among those taking part over the weekend were Jo Carritt, Charlie Webster, Mari Rabie, Nicola Adams, Mel C, Zoe Hardman, Jade Jones and Liz Dimmock.

For Liz Dimmock's next challenge, ‘WorldRide’ she hopes to become the fastest woman to circumnavigate the globe by bicycle, raising money for disadvantaged children in the process. Of the London Triathlon she said "as an ambassador for British Cycling and the Breeze programme, I am passionate about encouraging more women into cycling. This event is phenomenal – it’s great to see the excitement and focus people are giving to this event as well as much female representation. I’m proud it’s in London as it really shows the city at its best!”

Inspirational women

'Sporty Spice' Melanie Chisholm is no stranger to either the Virgin Active London Triathlon or the sport in general, and she completed the Sprint Distance in 1:31:20 on Saturday. After her race she said "once again the Virgin Active London Triathlon has been an incredible day, this is my second year competing and will definitely not be my last. Roll on next year, Olympic distance maybe?”

We introduced 'Team VA' last week (see interview HERE), and the 'Olympians' of Jade Jones, Nicola Adams and Louis Smith enjoyed their day on Staurday - including making an exciting entrance by JetSki.

Nicola said of her first triathlon experience “I feel really good after doing my first triathlon and would definitely love to do it again next year. It was great to be part of a team as we could share the same sense of achievement at the end. I hope that it inspires more people to give it a try as it’s such an accessible sport where all ages and abilities have the chance to race together.”

The elite races are always hard fought, but end with smiles on the podium (below). The men's top three was Gregory Rouault, Stuart Hayes and Mark Buckingham, while Jodie Stimpson lead home Lucy Hall and Emma Pallant.
