Daniel Halksworth retained his Ironman UK title by winning again today in Bolton ahead of long-time training partner Stephen Bayliss, while ‘Duracell Bunny’ Lucy Gossage lived up to her pre-race favourite status by winning the ladies title by a huge margin over Joanna Carritt, who secured her best ever M-Dot finish to take second place.

For the men, the day started with a very fast swim. As expected, Harry Wiltshire lead out of the water with Halksworth and Bayliss right on his shoulder and former winner Fraser Cartmell a few seconds off the pace. Halksworth admitted after the race that a fast swim was very much part of the plan, conscious of the bike/run strength of some of those athletes who would be chasing.

The bike leg was a neck-and-neck affair for the two TeamTBB athletes Halksworth and Bayliss reaching T2 still locked together, while further back Joe Skipper and Scott Neyedli were riding well and moving through the field.

On to the run, and while it may not be his favourite discipline, Halksworth is a much improved and stronger runner over recent years and he was able to pull away from Bayliss over the second half of the marathon to cross the line as champion once again, around three and a half minutes clear of his good friend.

Joe Skipper made up further time on the run with a 2:57:11 marathon for third place, while Scott Neyedli went event quicker (2:56:38), a superb effort from the 2007 Ironman UK winner who these days balances his triathlon racing with full time work, and for a while looked like he might make another Ironman podium. Behind Scott, Joel Jameson set the fastest marathon split of the day (2:52:23) to slip under the nine hour mark for fifth.

Lucy Gossage proved to be in a class of her own all day, setting the fastest splits in all disciplines (52:30 / 5:22:13 / 3:10:22) for a gun-to-tape victory at a race she only entered a couple of weeks ago. Her 9:29:12 finish is very impressive when you consider it is within 45 minutes of the lead man.
