This Sunday will see the Belgian city of Geel swap chocolates and beer for the sport of duathlon or, more specifically, Powerman. The Powerman Vlaanderen Duathlon will feature all the big names: local hero Benny Vansteelant, Jurgen Dereere, Denmark's Aksel Nielsen, Germany's Bernd Weis and Sebastian Retzlaff, Wim Nieuwkerk from Holland and Swiss athlete Jonas Bauman will battle for the men's title while in the women's field Long Distance world champion and 2006 Powerman European Champion Yvonne van Vlerken from the Netherlands is the top favourite. She will compete against Germany's Ulrike Schwalbe, Britain's Michelle Parsons, Belgium's multiple U23 world champion Miek Vyncke and the Belgian short and long course champions Mieke Depoortere and Anne Marie Dupont. Race information can be found on their website: www.powerman.be. What you won't find there, however, is an explanation as to why the Belgians are just so damn good at duathlon! It can't be anything to do with the beer and the chocolate or else our names would be on the list as well...
