Welcome to our regular Friday lunchtime feature: the Instant Interview. A little something lighthearted to make the work week end just that little bit quicker.

Triathlon isn’t just about the triathletes. There’s a whole army of people in the background from volunteers, organisers, officials, shop owners, facility managers and the whole sports infrastructure as well. We thought it would be fun to mix them in with famous, and some not so famous, athletes and get them to answer our 21 Question Instant Interview.

A hugely popular figure in the duathlon world (especially with the girls) Tom started out as a runner but has steadily moved up the rankings to become one of the world's top duathletes. He took his first major medal at this year's European Championships in Edinburgh where he won a highly commendable Bronze, finishing just behind Benny Vansteeland and Rob Woestenborghs. Amongst many successful running results, Tom has also dominated the Army and inter-forces cross country championships for the last two years.

Name?

Tom Lowe

Do you have a nickname?

Lung

What’s your favourite/most enjoyable race?

That would have to be the European Championship course in Edinburgh considering my recent results and the fact that I had a smile on my face for most of the race there a few weeks ago.

What race/goal/personal achievement would you most like to win/attain?

Although I’m a duathlete I would like to do well in a 70.3 however, that means swimming. I may give the UK 70.3 a go next year if I’m in good shape and I’ve spent some time in the pool.

What achievement would you most like to be remembered for?

I can’t really think of anything in particular. My best result so far is my European bronze this year, hopefully there are better achievements on the horizon that I will be remembered for. This might not necessarily be a sporting achievement!

What’s your most embarrassing moment?

To the delight of the spectators at a recent race in France my Trek decided that it would be a fantastic idea to play havoc with my chain just before the bike to run transition resulting in a very painful meeting with the crossbar. I don’t think my eyes could have gone more cross-eyed and the following expletives aimed at my chain were definitely a few octaves higher than normal.

Are you a member of any club?

I’m a member of Mulhouse Olympique Triathlon in France as well as the Army Triathlon Association. I also regularly turn out for Cheltenham Harriers running club.

What’s your favourite racing distance?

At the moment it’s the standard duathlon distance of 10k/40k/5k.

Who is your sporting or cultural inspiration?

Roger Federer is the complete sporting athlete. A master of his trade and humble too.

Within the sport, who would you most like to meet?

Annie Emmerson!!!!

What book/magazine/comic are you reading at the moment?

It’s called Freakonomics but to be honest I’m finding a little boring.

What’s currently playing most on your stereo/radio/iPod?

My brother is seriously into his music and he recently brought me an album by a band called the Noisettes. Check them out on the net, they are rocking!

What is your favourite training session?

I like a good kilometre or mile reps session on the grass.

What is your favourite food or drink?

At the moment that would be a risotto or paella washed down with a great bottle of red followed by a few Bacardi and lemonades!!! Don’t laugh!

What’s your favourite animal?

Pot bellied pig

Tyres or tubulars?

Tubs

Tattoos or transfers?

If you want it you might as well go all the way and get a tattoo although I wouldn’t have either.

Shave or wax?

Shave

Trisuit or two-piece?

Two-piece

Talc or Vaseline?

Talc

Shades or hat?

Shades
