The BTA have issued the selection criteria for junior and elite
athletes at the European Championships and for the juniors at the
World Championships.
European Junior Triathlon Qualification
- Athletes who won individual medals in the European or World
Junior championships 2000 will be pre selected.
- Athletes will otherwise be selected from results at the Eton
Sprint Triathlon (20th May 2001), such that, if eligible, the
winner of the Junior Elite race will be selected, plus other
placings in order, up to the allotted Team number, allowing for the
situations described below. (Athletes wishing to be considered for
selection to European championships should enter as a Junior Elite
competitor.)
- Athletes whose performance at Eton was influenced by a
pre-declared illness (declared to BTA medical officer), or
mechanical failure, can nominate results from the British Junior
Championships (Terrapin Triathlon 10th June), providing they finish
this race within 1:04 hours (male) or 1:09 hours (female).
World Junior Triathlon Qualification
- Athletes who won individual medals in the European or World
Junior championships 2000 will be pre selected.
- Athletes placing in the top 10 at the 2001 European Junior
championships will also be selected.
- Athletes will otherwise be selected from results at the
Pembrokeshire Triathlon (30th June 2001), based on placings, up to
the allotted Team number. Providing they finish this race within
2:05 hours (male) or 2:15 hours (female).
European Championships Senior Selection Criteria, 2001
- The top 3 ranked British triathletes on the ITU Points Table at
year end 2000 pre qualify for the European Championships team.
- Other places will then be determined from 2 selection races
(Funchal ITU race, May 13 and Zundert ITU race, June 4) as
follows:
- An athlete placing top 3 at Funchal or winning at Zundert will
be automatically selected, provided they are eligible. Remaining
places, if any, would be chosen on a count back system, considering
the athlete's best position, with preferential consideration given
to placings at Funchal. [Rationale: The Funchal course is a similar
profile to the European Champs, so needs bias towards it, as is
therefore one we will fund WC athletes to. The Zundert race is of
similar standard and easily accessible from the UK, so would give
those WC athletes still uncertain after Funchal another
opportunity, while giving those unfunded a chance to make their
claims at low cost (they obviously could also fund themselves to
both).]
- Teams for the Team Time Trials will be selected from the same 2
races by selection committee on developmental grounds, but will
only be selected if they have the potential to medal. No athlete
racing the individual race who is also likely to race the 2001
World Championships will be considered for the Team Time
Trial.
