![]() Crystal Palace Carbon Neutral Race Full Posted on: Friday 22nd August 2008 Bookmark This | Print This Page | Send To A Friend The Crystal Palace Triathlon, organised by Crystal Palace Triathletes (CPT)is believed to be the first carbon-neutral triathlon to be held in the UK. Almost two months before the race it is fully subscribed and a waiting list is in operation. Over 50 eager triathletes are already waiting to see if anyone drops out! The carbon-neutral theme has proved popular with competitors with 432 of the 450 indicating they think this a good initiative. 43 entrants have also signed up to the car sharing scheme that is being supported by JamBusters (www.cptcarshare.co.uk). Bromley Council (www.bromley.gov.uk) are providing recycling bins for use on the day and consultants, Zero Carbon Events, will be advising the club on reducing the amount of waste generated and energy consumed and how to off-set the carbon footprint after the event. The race will then make a donation to one of the Gold Standard / Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) projects. There will be some changes to this year's race format as the 50m pool in the National Sports Centre is still closed for refurbishment. The event will consist of a 400m swim in the Sports Centre's training pool, followed by a 20k nine-lap cycle around the traffic-free Crystal Palace Park and finishing with a 5k run, which incorporates 2.5 laps of the athletics track. The race will return to its original format - with a 750m swim - next year when the 50m pool reopens. Entrants will be competing against Jem Lawson, Chairman of Triathlon England as well as last year's winner Dion Harrison. Sponsors Up and Running (www.runningshoes.org.uk) will be available on the day for any last minute purchases, inner tubes, helmets, race belts etc. Pre and post race message will be provided by the Crystal Palace Physiotherapy & Sports Injury Clinic (www.cpsic.co.uk). Support is also being given by Lucozade Sport (www.lssa-online.com), Infinit (www.infinitnutrition.eu), For Goodness Shakes (www.forgoodnessshakes.com), TriSport Coaching (www.trisportuk.org), Third Transition (www.thirdtransition.com) and GLL (www.gll.org). Photographer Graham Russell (www.grahamrussell.info) will be present on the day to capture the action. Club Chairman John Petrides announced, "We are delighted that yet again the Crystal Palace Triathlon has sold out and particularly pleased that there has been such a positive response to our carbon-neutral theme. CPT Club members will ensure that everyone, from first timers to seasoned triathletes, is welcomed, encouraged, supported and looked after on race day."
