She was 4th after the first run and then took the lead on the bike before World Champion Erika Csomor (HUN) caught her on the second run. Torrential rain on bike added to humid conditions which made it a very tough race. No results on their website yet but we know Benny Van Steelant won the mens race. The results probably means that Michelle will be drop to second in the World rankings, she was leading the rankings but the points system will mean that Csomor will now move ahead. Thanks to her husband for the update.

One we missed

http://www.tri247.com/article_1312.html

Before all the excitement of the World Champs we mentioned that it was Powerman Austria last weekend as well -- and then we promptly forgot about it... Joerie Vansteelant (BEL) not only won but did so in a new course record of 3:07:20 in what was effectively a solo race. Distant second place went to Karl Prungraber (AUT) in 3:20:25 with Hans Fischer Mogensen (DEN) third in 3:23:16. Michelle Parsons missed out on the win and placed second behind Sine Gasbjerg (DEN) with Solveig von der Fecht (GER). Parsons' second place did, however, give her enough points to top the Powerman World Ranking and is now in the lead ahead of Erika Csomor (HUN). Powerman Austria will be taking place on Sunday and there's a strong possibility that Michelle Parsons could get up there in the medals. Mens favourite will probably be Vansteelant -- but this time it's younger brother Joerie rather than Benny who'll be in the spotlight. Race details and background on their website: www.powerman.atAlso taking place are the 2006 World Biathle Champs (www.biathleworld.co.uk) and readers with good memories may recall one Richard Stannard winning last year at Weymouth. Main GB interest this year will be Maria Barrett who took Bronze at the ITU Aquathlon Championships on Wednesday and, so we are told, is the reigning European Biathle Champion and was World Junior Biathle Champion in 2005. Someone has either been keeping their light under a bushel or we have been very remiss in keeping up with a related multisport...

Powerman update

http://www.tri247.com/article_1320.html

Looks like Benny Vansteelant and Erika Csomor won at Powerman Zofingen today. Jess D-P finished as the bridesmaid for the third year in a row! Pro GB interest is limited to Jess Draskau Petersson (apologies to her, and the lady who wrote and complained, as we originally spelled her name incorrectly...) who has placed second there in both 2005 and 2005. The Powerman Vlaanderen Duathlon will feature all the big names: local hero Benny Vansteelant, Jurgen Dereere, Denmark's Aksel Nielsen, Germany's Bernd Weis and Sebastian Retzlaff, Wim Nieuwkerk from Holland and Swiss athlete Jonas Bauman will battle for the men's title while in the women's field Long Distance world champion and 2006 Powerman European Champion Yvonne van Vlerken from the Netherlands is the top favourite. She will compete against Germany's Ulrike Schwalbe, Britain's Michelle Parsons, Belgium's multiple U23 world champion Miek Vyncke and the Belgian short and long course champions Mieke Depoortere and Anne Marie Dupont. Race information can be found on their website: www.powerman.be. What you won't find there, however, is an explanation as to why the Belgians are just so damn good at duathlon! It can't be anything to do with the beer and the chocolate or else our names would be on the list as well...
