ETU Powerman Duathlon European Championships - 29th April
Website: www.powerman.nl
Powerman Holland in Horst aan de Maas has long been one of the highlights of the European duathlon calendar, hosting the Powerman European Championships annually. Check out the 2011 race report from Irish duathlete David Vaughan HERE.

The event will expand and have additional importance in 2012 as we announced recently, with Powerman and the ETU joining forces to host a Sprint Duathlon European Championships (5km Run / 20km Bike / 2.5km Run) and a Long Distance Duathlon European Championships (15km Run / 60km Bike / 7.5km Run).

With Holland being so easily accessible from the UK, an ideal opportunity for a challenging, quality overseas race without breaking the bank.

WINDJAMMER POWERMAN FUERTEVENTURA - 5th May
Website: www.windjammersports.net/duathlon/powerman-fuerteventura
Powerman Fuerteventura is the latest addition to annual Powerman Duathlon (www.powerman.org) calendar, which culminates with the legendary Powerman Zofingen in September.
Powerman events can be relied upon to be challenging, and this new event comprising of an 11.5km run - 75km bike - 13.5km run (a "Powerman 100") is set to live up to that history. A worthy challenge.
The event is based at the increasingly popular sports resort of Playitas (www.playitas.info) which boasts a magnificent 50m Olympic pool, huge fitness centre and many more sporting attractions. Denmark's Rasmus Henning has been based permanently at Playitas with his family for a while now, and the Raelert brothers, Marino Vanhoenacker and Martin Jensen are just a few of the top names in the sport who have made use of the facility regularly. Playitas offers excellent quality and choice of accommodation too, which will always keep the rest of the family happy while you are making the most of the fantastic cycling on Fuerteventura.
In addition to the Powerman, additional less taxing events will be held: the Windjammer Sprint 30 Duathlon (4.5 km / 21 km / 4.5 km) and the Windrunners 14km run.
The first run of the Powerman is fairly flat... but from then on it gets tough, the second run - up to and back from Faro de la Entallada lighthouse - described as "brutal"! There are plenty of hills, up and down, on the bike course too...
Entries to all of the events save 20% before 31st January 2012. Event information booklet.

Great Britain's Matt Moorhouse has already committed to the race: “The Windjammer Powerman looks to be an event that needs to be respected. The athletes will first need to beat the gruelling course, heat and the famous winds before considering beating the competition... Bring it on!”

ETU links with Powerman for 2012 Duathlon Championships

http://www.tri247.com/article_9478.html

Busy times for the Powerman (www.powerman.org) organisation, the leading name in duathlon events. In 2011 the ITU World Long Distance Duathlon Championships returned to the calendar in partnership with the Powerman Zofingen (Switzerland) event, the toughest event on the annual Powerman calendar.

In 2012, in addition to a new Powerman event on Saturday 5th May - Powerman Fuerteventura at Playitas resort - Powerman have also announced a link-up with the European Triathlon Union (ETU) to host both a Long Distance Duathlon European Championships and a Sprint Duathlon European Championships at Powerman Holland, Horst aan de Mass on 29th April 2012.

With the 2012 ITU Duathlon World Championships being held in Nancy, France in September, there's plenty of international duathlon racing action action to be had this year across the other side of the English Channel.

Here is the full announcement:

The European Triathlon Union (ETU) and International Powerman Association (IPA) are pleased to announce a Sprint Duathlon European Championships for Juniors and Age Group athletes and an Elite and Age Group Long Distance Duathlon European Championships.

Both Championships will be held in Horst aan de Maas, the Netherlands, on 29 April 2012.

Duathletes from all over Europe will battle a Long Distance Championships course of 15km Run / 60km Bike / 7.5km Run and a Sprint Championship course of 5km Run / 20km Bike / 2.5km Run.

In previous years the Dutch Local Organizing Committee has organized ITU World Championships, Powerman European Championships and National Championships and up until 1993 they organised Triathlons.

After the successful 2011 ITU Powerman Long Distance Duathlon World Championships in Zofingen, Switzerland, in September, all partners believe this is an exciting step forward for the future of European Duathlon.

President of the European Triathlon Union, Philip Schädler said: “For many years the International Powerman Association have successfully promoted Long Distance Duathlon Series for Elite and age group athletes.

"I am glad that after a couple of years of consultation we can now join forces with IPA to have one common platform for the European Championships in Long Distance Duathlon for Elite and Age Group athletes.

"We have also decided to introduce, for the first time, a European Championship in Sprint Duathlon for Juniors and Age Group athletes. This gives young athletes and age groupers the possibility to race for an European title on the short distance as well.
"I am convinced that we will see a great event and I herewith invite all athletes to race at the 2012 ETU Powerman European Championships.”

John Raadschelders, President of IPA echoed the sentiments. He said: "Today, the ETU and IPA have taken a new and innovative step to organize a Duathlon Championship over both the Sprint and Long Distance disciplines.

"This will create more awareness for the sport of Duathlon. Spectators will see the gruelling and tough nature of the Long Distance event married with the exciting and intense Sprint Distance Championship.

"This will definitely boost the sport of Duathlon and allow athletes and spectators to appreciate the diversity of the sport."

The President of the Dutch Triathlon Federation Henk van Lint said: "We are am very honoured that a Dutch organization has chosen to organize these European Championships.

"This is a big step for the sport of Duathlon and we have strongly supported this initiative form the beginning.

"The Netherlands and especially the Province of Limburg, love to be the host nation for all European National Teams and Duathletes."

Further information on the 2012 ETU Powerman Duathlon European Championships, will appear on the ETU website in due course. Follow this link

The race will be held on Saturday 5th May on the Spanish island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands.

The Powerman series grew from the original Powerman Duathlon that was created in Zofingen, Switzerland. Today, it forms the World Championships of Long Distance Duathlon and is still the most brutal test of a duathlete’s strength and endurance. The legendary triathlete, Mark Allen, a winner of the Hawaii Ironman an incredible six times, said that Powerman Zofingen was the hardest race he had ever participated in.

The Windjammer Powerman Duathlon Fuerteventura will serve as an official qualifying event for the Long Distance World Championships, as well as serving as the Spanish Duathlon National Championships and the Canary Islands Duathlon Championships. As such, Windjammer Sports have created a route that will live up to all the expectations created by the Powerman brand, with a exceptionally challenging and exciting route that will be a true and honest test of the participants’ courage and endurance.

The main event has distances of 12km/75km/13km. To create a very special Powerman Race Day Experience, Windjammer Sports also have a short course version, called theWindjammer SPRINT 30 Duathlon, held over parts of the main course but with distances of 4km/21km/4km. A stand-alone run event, the Windrunners 14K, will be raced over the final leg of the main event - out-and-back to the Faro de la Entallada lighthouse, perched on a cliff-top 200m above sea-level.

The event is hosted by Playitas Resort - for which Windjammer Sports are Official Cycle Partners - a four-star sports and activity family resort, nestling on the Atlantic coast of this sun-drenched, laid-back island. General Manager of Playitas, Stephan Meyvisch: “I look forward to welcoming all the competitors, and their families, to Playitas. We set high standards here, and working with Windjammer Sports and the IPA shows our commitment to attracting top quality events to Playitas and to Fuerteventura.”

President of the IPA, John Raadschelders said: “I am delighted to have Windjammer Sports as a partner of Powerman, and after my recent visit to Playitas to view the route and the facilities, I am very confident that this race will be a true epic".

Windjammer Sports is a new premium sports and events company specializing in the creation of challenging endurance events in cycling, running and duathlon. Race Director, Mark Davies: “With a five-time Age Group World Champion involved in the company it only took a few days after we set up in Fuerteventura to realize what an incredible duathlon we could have here. We know about this sport. We’re thrilled to be working with the IPA because Powerman is THE name in duathlon. People have certain expectations of a Powerman event and we intend to exceed them.”

Windjammer Sports are also setting up specialist Powerman Duathlon Training Camps at Playitas to help those preparing for the event, and other upcoming Powerman duathlons. “It’s going to be a tough race,” added Mark Davies. “We are jokingly suggesting that people might be better off staying in bed!”

Vansteelant, Svendsen take Powerman Austria

http://www.tri247.com/article_8990.html

Today's Powerman Austria (www.powerman.at) in Weyer was the final event of the 2010/11 Powerman World Series before the ITU Powerman World Championship in Zofingen, Switzerland on Sunday 4th September.
The Austrian event is held over a 15.6km / 82.4km / 7.3km course, and attracted many of the world's best long distance duathletes ahead of the Swiss classic in two weeks time. A tough challenge made harder by temperatures touching mid 30 degrees celcius. That wasn't enough to stop Duathlon legend Joerie Vansteelant (BEL) and Denmark's Susanne Svendsen from taming both course and conditions.
Vansteelant lead from the start, heading into T1 alongside Frenchman Anthony Le Duey with 2010 Powerman World Champion Andy Sutz 50 seconds back. Vansteelant destroyed the bike course and his opposition, and by the finish line had gained a huge margin of eight minutes. He will prove very difficult to beat in Zofingen, returning to the race he missed last season to race in the ITU World Duathlon Championships in Edinburgh where he gained bronze in a Belgian clean sweep of the men's podium.

Joerie crossed the finish line holding his baby-son Niels who was born in May 2011: “I feel so well here in Weyer, it’s almost like family holiday with our homestay family every time. It was really very hot today, but I was well prepared as I could do some good training in the mountains before and the hot conditions have not been a problem for me. I am glad to having been able to win again.”
Svendsen has raced well in the past on the Powerman circuit, but will be exceptionally pleased to have beaten seven time Powerman Zofingen winner Erika Csomor - that said, Csomor was racing just six days after winning Embrunman, having already raced Ironman Austria and Ironman Switzerland in recent weeks. Hopefully she'll now take a break next weekend before taking on the might of Zofingen.

The event will be held on 4 September 2011 with the elite duathletes fighting it out for gold over a 10km run followed by a 150km bike then a 30km run. A total prize purse of $50,000 USD will be up for grabs.
It is the fourth time in the history of duathlon that Powerman Zofingen will also host the ITU Long Distance Duathlon World Championships and this year's course will follow previous editions and offer a challenging race through one of Switzerland's beautiful small towns.
Those behind the partnership believe this is a significant step forward for international duathlon.
Marisol Casado, ITU President and IOC Member, said:
“The ITU is excited this partnership with Powerman Duathlon will help develop and strengthen duathlon. It points towards an exciting future not just for duathlon but all of ITU's multisports as these events continue to grow around the world. I would like to thank Brian Hinton of the ITU MultiSport Committee for his hard work on ITU's side of this agreement.”
John Raadschelders, President, International Powerman Association (IPA), said:
"This joined ITU Powerman Long Distance Duathlon World Championship is what all duathletes worldwide wanted for years. It's also proves that both are aware of the synergy our cooperation can bring to improve the duathlon world.”
Stefan Ruf, Powerman Zofingen President, said:
“The reintroducing of an ITU Long Distance Duathlon World Championship at Powerman Zofingen is the strongest message possible to athletes, organisers and federations about the future of duathlon. After a period of 12 years, Powerman Zofingen will host ITU Duathlon Long Distance World Championships for the fourth time in the history of duathlon. Zofingen has been the most challenging race for duathletes all over the world since 1989.”
The last ITU Long Distance Duathlon World Championships were held in Geel, Belgium in 2008 with Great Britain's Catriona Morrison and Belgium's Joerie Vansteelant winning the respective men's and women's championships. The ITU Long Distance Duathlon World Championships were first held in 1997.

All three recorded top-15 positions in one of the most hotly contested races of the weekend, and here David reports on some fast and furious racing - and he's keen to spread the word on these high quality, high profile European duathlon races.

Europe's best long distance duathletes met in Holland for the European Powerman Duathlon Championships at Horst aan de Maas on Sunday, which consisted of a 15k run, then a 60k bike followed by a gruelling 7.5k run.
Pro athlete Anthony Le Duey from France won the event for the second year in a row exhibiting a dominant display in one of the most competitive international fields assembled in the sport of long distance Duathlon for many years. The race also formed the Dutch and Luxembourg National Championships.
GB based athletes were very active at the front of the race with Matt Moorhouse finishing in seventh, and Lee Piercy and David Vaughan battling it out over the final run to finish 13th and 14th respectively in a field of over 400 athletes. You could be forgiven for thinking that the pace is more sedate in these long distance events but at the top of the field the athletes were clocking 31.30 for the first 10k of the very twisty first 15km run leg and averaging over 25mph on the 60km technical bike leg.

The 10k / 60k / 10k course also served as the USA Triathlon Long Distance National Duathlon Championship. Michelle is no stranger to the podium in Powerman events, the tough distances and non-drafting formats playing to her strengths, and she used her bike speed in Alabama to overcome a one minute deficit at T1 to catch and pass Deanna Newman (USA). The three minutes gained on the bike proved enough, and despite losing a little time on the final 10k run, it was another victory to add to a very impressive race CV.
Ryan Giuliano (USA) dominated the men's race in the absence of 2010 winner and Powerman king Joerie Vansteelant, setting the fastest splits on the first run and bike leg, to cruise home to a comfortable win.

At the first edition of Powerman Italy in Malgrate/Lecco a top international field took to the roads for the last Powerman Duathlon event of the European season 2010.
From the start Joerie Vansteelant (BEL) set the pace and only Anthony Le Duey (FRA) was able to follow. After some 31 minutes back in the transition area, Vansteelant made a gap with a very fast change to bike and was from then an unchallanged leader. Current Powerman World Champion Andy Sutz (SUI) left transition one minute adrift and headed out for the demanding bike course over 80 km. After 35 km along Lake Como on a flat course heading to Bellagio, a 13 km long climbing was the challenge of the day. Sutz tried everything but with two falls on the wet and very slippery roads he lost more and more time. Back to Malgrate, Vansteelant's lead was impressive and he could cruise the second run, without any need to push to the limits. Sutz arrived with Soren Bystrup (DEN) minutes behind whilst the unlucky Frenchman Le Duey missed an intersection and had to give up in promising position. Eight minutes behind Vansteelant, Bystrup ran down Sutz on the last meters of the second run, consisting of another 10 km. Vansteelant said: “This was the perfect finale of this season. After a break, I will start my preparation for Powerman Zofingen 2011.”
In the women's race Ulrike Schwalbe (GER) won in 4:01:33 her second Powerman race in 2010 after Powerman Germany in May. Second was the Dane Susan Svendsen before the Swiss 2010 Powerman Vice-World Champion Jacqueline Uebelhart.
