As Official Travel Partners to IMG, Sports Tours International (www.sportstoursinternational.co.uk) took a group of competitors and supporters from GB over to take part in the second edition of the Mazda Stockholm Triathlon at the weekend.
It was a great race with everyone getting round and really enjoying the event which took place on a very scenic course. There was some wind on the bike which made it a true test for everyone. The location for a race is amazing, right in the centre of one of Europe’s most beautiful capital cities and the weather was beautiful and sunny, really showing off Stockholm in its best light.

The bike course took place on beautiful smooth closed roads following some of the main boulevards through the Swedish Capital and along the gorgeous water front. Meanwhile the run took place in the beautiful grounds of the Royal Djurgården Park. The event continues to grow each year with 1,300 competitors competing in 2009 and more and more Brits taking part, it is fast becoming one of the ‘must do’ races on the International triathlon calendar.

Sports Tours International will definitely be offering packages for competitors and their supporters for the 2010 edition. For more info or to book your place for 2010 email triathlon@sportstoursinternational.co.uk

As well as receiving two places to compete in the stunning Mazda Stockholm Triathlon in Sweden's capital city, Ian Evans, also picked up flights and two night’s accommodation in a four-star hotel in central Stockholm.
Ian won the fantastic triathlon package after entering a prize draw at the Mazda Blenheim Triathlon, held in the picturesque grounds of Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire, last weekend (6-7 June). The competition was organised by headline sponsor Mazda and event organiser IMG.
The 24-year-old chef will take part in the Mazda Stockholm Triathlon alongside his brother Matthew, a seasoned triathlete.
“I went to the Mazda Blenheim Triathlon to cheer on my brother Matthew and sister Sian who were both competing – it was the first time I’d ever been to a triathlon,” explains Ian. “I was really struck by the whole buzz – it was such a fantastic atmosphere and the look of absolute joy on their faces when they crossed the finish line convinced me to take it up too. I was thrilled when I found out I’d won entry to the Mazda Stockholm Triathlon – I can’t wait to compete!”
Mazda UK sales and marketing director Mark Cameron, who made his triathlon debut at the Mazda Blenheim Triathlon, congratulated Ian, adding: “This is a truly exciting prize and I’m delighted for Ian and wish him the best of luck in his first triathlon. The inaugural Mazda Stockholm Triathlon proved a huge success in 2008 and this year’s event is set to be even bigger and better.”
Director of IMG Mass Participation Sports, Nick Rusling comments: “The second Mazda Stockholm Triathlon takes place on Sunday 23 August and captures some of the most unique sights that the Swedish city has to offer. The event starts with the swim on the Royal Djurgården Island from the docks, the bike route then winds its way through the centre of historic Stockholm with the run finishing outside the maritime museum.”
Mazda is committed to growing the sport of triathlon. As well as providing sponsorship to major events such as the Mazda Blenheim and London Triathlons, Mazda also sponsors elite triathlete Tim Don to act as an ambassador for the sport. Mazda has also formed a team to compete in this year’s events, consisting of staff from all levels of the business, including directors and dealers as well as motoring and sports journalists.
Triathlon is the fastest growing mass participation sport in the UK due to its variety, accessibility and scope to train both indoors and out.
“Mazda’s Zoom-Zoom philosophy is about exhilarating experiences and the thrill of challenging oneself and triathlon echoes that perfectly,” adds Mark Cameron.

2 cups cottage cheese
¼ cup flour
3 eggs
¼ cup fructose or sugar
2 cups of light cream or plain soy milk
½ cup coarsely chopped almonds

Add all ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. Grease a 10” fluted pie pan or 8” cake pan. Pour mixture into pan. Bake at 350°F for one hour, or until knife inserted in centre comes out clean. Serve with whipped cream and jelly, or frozen raspberries (or lingonberries if you can get them).

And for the weekend: Glögg
Glögg is a traditional beverage drunk by Swedes in the winter months. The traditional recipe is made with sherry and brandy; here is a non-alcoholic version of the mulled wine. This is a warming drink to enjoy after time spent in the wintry outdoors. For those not competing just replace the apple cider of non-alcoholic wine with sherry and brandy!

6 cups apple cider of non-alcoholic wine
¾ cup blanched almonds
5 sticks cinnamon
10 cloves
1 cup organic raisins
10 cardamom pods

Simmer the spices in just enough cider or wine to cover for 15 minutes in a small saucepan. Once it has simmered, bottle the contents of the saucepan with the remainder of the cider or wine. Let sit for 1-3 days, warm thoroughly before serving. Always serve warmed.

If somebody offers you their hand in Sweden it will generally be not be expecting a tip but is a friendly greeting At hotels it is down to the individual and not an expected part of the visit to be tipping staff all the time. For great service you can decide.
At restaurants a small service charge will generally be added to your bill for lunches but in the evenings, as with the rest of the world, a suitable tip can happily be left for staff. In bars you may leave a small amount but at waited tables you may have a modest service charge added automatically.

Taxi drivers should be given a few extra kronor in relation to the cost of the journey. Generally rounding up the cost and a little extra.

The national anthem
The text of the national anthem, 'Du gamla, Du fria' was written by folklorist and ballad writer Richard Dybeck (1811–77) and set to a folk melody from the province of Västmanland in the middle of the 19th century. Around 1900 it started to be sung more frequently, and in course of time it has come to be regarded as the Swedish national anthem.

Thou ancient, thou freeborn, thou mountainous North,
In beauty and peace our hearts beguiling,
I greet thee, thou loveliest land on the earth,
Thy sun, thy skies, thy verdant meadows smiling.
Thy sun, thy skies, thy verdant meadows smiling.
Thy throne rests on mem’ries from great days of yore,
When worldwide renown was valour’s guerdon.
I know to thy name thou art true as before.
Oh, I would live and I would die in Sweden,
Oh, I would live and I would die in Sweden.

We hope that you have enjoyed our Swedish week and will feel inspired to take part in the Stockholm Triathlon in August.
