Geoff Earl, President triathlonscotland commented:
“triathlonscotland is delighted with the success that our members have achieved at this years 220 Triathlon awards, one of the most prestigious events for our sport in the UK. The fact that so many Scots have triumphed this year, especially with Edinburgh RC becoming the first Scottish club to achieve success, recognises the continuing growth of triathlon in Scotland and the increasing impact that Scotland and Scottish athletes are having on the UK and International Scene”.

Wetsuit hat-trick for the bluesventy Helix

http://www.tri247.com/article_8194.html

For the third year running blueseventy's Helix wetsuit has taken the 220 Triathlon Wetsuit of the Year award, presented last Saturday night during as part of the TCR show annual show.
It's the fourth win for the Helix in five years, making it by far the most favoured wetsuit by triathletes. Dean Jackson, Global Sales and Marketing Manager at blueseventy, commented; “we're delighted to accept this award, which continues to endorse our status as the world leader in triathlon and open water wetsuits. The award means so much more to the company because the people who matter most – the athletes, voted for us. We're always focused on continuing to develop, refine and test our suits to ensure we can offer the most advanced wetsuit technology on the market, and this award validates the hard work the team put in to this process”.
Far from resting on the success of the Helix, blueseventy have continued to evolve the wetsuit market. They released the new range of Balanced Buoyancy suits in 2010 – it is the first range of wetsuits developed to match suit buoyancy with the specific biomechanical needs of the athlete. The range has been a great success with triathletes, particularly those not from a strong swimming background.
blueseventy shared more success than just winning the Best Wetsuit Award – they were also proud to be associated with a number of other award winners on the night including blueseventy athletes Alistair Brownlee (Best Men's Elite Athlete), Cat Morrison (Best Women's Duathlete) and Lou Collins (Best Female Age Grouper), as well as Best Retail Store TFN, Best Online retailer Wiggle.co.uk, and Best Website Tri247.

Llandudno Sea Triathlon wins Race of the Year award

http://www.tri247.com/article_8178.html

The Llandudno Sea Triathlon was named as ‘Race of the Year’ (with less than 500 competitors) on Saturday night at the prestigious 220 Triathlon Awards, held at Sandown Park Racecourse.
2010 was only the second year that the North Wales-based triathlon had taken place. At the same awards last year, the event had come third in this category, and to go on to win this year is a true accolade for organisers Xtra Mile Events.
With its stunning coastal location and vista, and closed roads, the Llandudno Sea Triathlon is becoming a “must do” race in the triathlon calendar, and the 2010 race attracted 450 competitors from as far afield as Australia and Germany.

An emotional Race Organiser, Simon Hill, gave an acceptance speech paying particular note to all those who had played their part in staging the event. This included Conwy Council, Llandudno Town Council (in particular Events Officer, Alun Pritchard), the Mayor of Llandudno, Llandudno Harbour Master, Llandudno Sailing Club, Conwy Police, Llandudno Swimming Centre, Venue Cymru, Carneddau Triathlon Club, Colwyn Bay Canoe Club, all the fantastic volunteers and officials, and, of course, all the local residents who came out in force to support the triathlon. Hill also thanked all those who voted, afterwards stating, “It is a tremendous honour and privilege that people took the trouble to vote for this event. Thank you all so much.”
The Llandudno Sea Triathlon incorporates two races: a standard distance triathlon and a shorter, sprint distance triathlon. Llandudno is an ideal location for a sea-based triathlon because of its Blue Flag beaches with excellent water quality. It is also a striking Victorian town with plenty of family entertainment, set amidst spectacular scenery; and with plenty of opportunities for spectators to view all three stages of the event, there is always a fantastic atmosphere. The event incorporates the thrill of a sea swim, and a challenging cycle section on mainly closed roads around the Great Orme (a 225metre high limestone headland) with its glorious vista over the North Wales Coast. The run route is over and back over the ‘Little Orme’ (another imposing headland), with a sea breeze to cool competitors to the finish.
The 2010 race attracted a lot of fundraising competitors, who raised thousands of pounds for various charities, including £5,000 for the Nightingale House Hospice.
The Llandudno Sea Triathlon will take place again in 2011 on 17th July. More details can be found at www.XtraMileEvents.com

Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to 220 Magazine / TAUT for once again sponsoring a great evening.

blueseventy scoops best wetsuit award at 220 Triathlon Awards

http://www.tri247.com/article_4730.html

Top swim and triathlon brand, blueseventy, has picked up the “2009 Triathlon Wetsuit of the Year Award” for its ‘Helix’ wetsuit at last weekend’s 220 Triathlon Awards.

The 220 Triathlon Awards are the only triathlon specific awards in the UK voted for by the public and represent the pinnacle of achievement in the triathlon industry. Held at Sandown Race Course, the Awards are the focal point of the TCR Show, which saw an impressive crowd throughout the weekend.

The year’s winners were fittingly announced during a glittering ceremony, on the eve of the glamorous BAFTAs. Whilst the Hollywood crowd flocked to London’s Royal Opera House, Esher drew some of British sport’s leading figures, including Olympic gold medalist Tim Brabants and double World Ironman Champion, Chrissie Wellington.

Dean Jackson, Global Sales and Marketing Manager at blueseventy, commented; “We’re delighted to accept this award, which reaffirms our status as the world leader in triathlon and open water wetsuits, especially as it was voted for by the public. We’ve been designing, testing, and refining our products using the most advanced technology available – and this award is testament to a great product.”

The award marks an exciting start to the year for the brand as it looks to continue its dominance in triathlon and open water, whilst also making its mark in the pool with some of the biggest athletes in the world choosing blueseventy.

Gatorade at the 220 Awards

http://www.tri247.com/article_4716.html

Gatorade (www.gatorade.co.uk), is the world's most researched sports drink and has been tested in every condition, in every major sport and on every continent. Put simply - nothing works better.

It's in all of the following winners from the 2009 220 Triathlon Awards:

Alistair Brownlee secured his Beijing Olympic spot at just 20 years of age, courtesy of a third place finish at the Madrid World Cup. In contention for a medal until late in the run, he races without fear in an era when most of the competition are content to wait. Alistair is the one to watch for 2012.
Alistair also won his second World Championship title, adding the Under-23 title in Vancouver, to the junior title he won in Lausanne in 2006.

Stephen Bayliss had easily the best season of his life in 2008. Not only did he win his first Ironman title in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, he also won his home Ironman in Sherborne.
In finishing second at Ironman Austria in August, Stephen also set a British record time for the Ironman distance. He finished the year by getting married to Bella Comerford!
Expect more great performances from Stephen in 2009.

Jonathan Brownlee is the younger brother of Alistair, but talent clearly runs strong in that family.
In 2008 he retained his British Championship junior titles in both triathlon and duathlon, and also won World Championship bronze at the ITU World Junior Champs in Lausanne, as well as getting his first taste of World Cup racing at senior level.
Could we have two Brownlee's on the 2012 Olympic team?

Simon Ward is founder of TheTriathlonCoach.com, and has coached around 100 athletes to Ironman finishes, including several Hawaii qualifiers. He is also coach to Dion Harrison and Felicity Hart, and a prolific writer in the triathlon press and online.

Dion Harrison has had an extremely busy and successful year, competing in four international World Championship events (ITU standard, ITU Long, Hawaii Ironman and 70.3 World's). His finest moment was winning the ITU World Long Distance Championship.
Dion has also competed extensively on the domestic circuit, winning the UK National Triathlon League and also the London Triathlon sub-2:30 wave.
In 2009 Dion will be racing as a professional.

The Ilkley Triathlon is organised and run by Leeds and Bradford Triathlon Club (www.lbt.org.uk).
Year on year, triathlon events, even at the club level are becoming more and more professionally run. There were some fantstically organised events that didn't even make the shortlist, so to win the award is a measure of just how far this event has come.

Felicity Hart first came to prominence in 2007, when she won both the National Triathlon and Duathlon Series, the National Age Group Triathlon Championship and last year was 220 Age Grouper of the Year.
She upped her game again in 2008, competing now at elite level and using her rocket-like biking to win the National Elite Duathlon title and the Clumber Park Duathlon by large margins. We expect to see even more from Felicity in 2009.

Bella Comerford had the sort of year most athletes can only dream about.
She competed in EIGHT iron-distance events in 2008, winning five of them! She won in South Africa, Lanzarote, the UK, Florida and France (Embrunman). She also managed to set the fastest ever British Ironman time at Ironman Austria (8:51:17), and ended the year by finishing in the top ten at the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii.

Tri247.com was launched in January 2007, and has firmly established itself at the UK's number one online triathlon resource. As official results service to British Triathlon, athletes rely upon the site to get their results and event information first and fast.
Tri247 also provide up-to-the-minute news, interviews, features (including the Gatorade Athlete of the Month), event profiles, product reviews and more, and has now won the Website of the Year award for the second consecutive year.
