Welcome to the newsletter

First, and foremost, congratulations to our Club La Santa/Volcano Triathlon competition winner, Caroline Slaughter from Wigan. Well done on getting the correct answer (4 - many people didn't get it right...) and we hope you enjoy the trip and the race. We look forward to getting a write-up next year! For all those who missed out, but still fancy a trip to La Santa, there will be a little bonus on the website tomorrow morning!

Rather than look back at what happened this weekend (not a lot...) let's look forward to next weekend instead where there's a couple of new events on the calendar. First, we have the revival of Human Race's Mudman off-road duathlon - a perennial favourite for its simple, down-and-dirty approach but absent from the calendar for five years. Moving to a new home near Camberley, and with Merrell as a new main sponsor, this should be the first in a short series of off-road races across the Winter months. F3 are also kicking-off a new Winter Duathlon Series at Dorney Lake. Both this and the Mudman event are supported by straight runs as well so those who don't fancy the bike bit can also get in some decent exercise - although we suspect that the Mudman people will get a whole lot dirtier... There are other events besides, we'll cover these in the weekend preview on Friday, but the one that really tempts us is this one!

If you don't fancy racing at the weekend, dirty or otherwise, you could slip off down to Bournemouth where the all-new TriExpo will be providing a diet of seminars and exhibitors for the triathlon community. With all the top bikes on show courtesy of Primera and presentations from the likes of triathlon coaching legend Joe Friel and current XTERRA World Champion Julie Dibens there should be plenty to occupy yourself with. The organisers have informed us of a couple of changes to the scheduled speakers: Andrew Potter, lead coach at T3 Performance in London, has taken over the swim sessions from Glen Walker while physiotherapist John Dennis has been added to the programme and he'll be talking about tri-specific sports injuries and how to avoid them in the 4.30-5.15 slot on Saturday afternoon. Tacx will now be showing their full range and there will be an i-Magic and a Fortius system setup in the hall for people to try out their virtual reality systems. They hope to have the Multiplayer version on show as well. SRM have also confirmed that they will have their new wireless power/GPS system on show for the first time - as we reported from the Cycle Show, this uses the new Garmin Edge 705 unit. Full details on the event can be can be found on their website: www.triexpo.com.

Weekend action

In what has been one of the quietest weekends of the year for events, the only significant international action seems to have been the ITU African Cup in Mombasa, Kenya. The field was hardly stacked and Hendrik De Villiers (RSA) showed his class with a fairly easy win, Richard Stannard gave up nearly two minutes to claim second place. In the women's race Emma Davis, still racing under the ITU's flag rather than Ireland's, blew the field apart and cruised home with over 15 minutes to spare.

Pos Men Women
1 Hendrik De Villiers (RSA) 01:50:29 Emma Davis (ITU) 02:00:51
2 Richard Stannard (GBR) 01:52:17 Fabienne Aline St Louis (MRI) 02:16:15
3 Kent Horner (RSA) 01:53:39 Panagiota Kastrouni (GRE) 02:17:38

At the Cirencester Off-Road Duathlon we still don't know who won the main race but the organisers also ran a half-distance novice race which was won by Charlie White (Southampton Tri) in 0:40:52 with Camilla Briggs as the fastest woman in 0:49:22. The results for that race are here.

Training

Route planning

Have you seen the exciting Routeplanning section supported by Garmin and Motion based? It tells you all you need to know about how planning and preparation can help with getting more information from your training sessions and how technology, if used appropriately, can make that easier and more fun!

For the current Route of the Month we decided to re-visit a classic cyling route, the Box Hill circuit, but this time we took the cameras out for a full visual as well as re-writing the text to get it completely up to date. Ideal coverage in preparation for the legendary Ballbuster Duathlon coming up in November, it also makes a great starting point for a day training in the Surrey Hills.

Why not send in your requests for which routes you would like to be analysed? Or, perhaps, you would like to ride it for us? We'll even lend you a Garmin Edge! Send your suggestions to editor@tri247.com

Run

Shoe advice

Did you know Tri247 has a Shoe Advice section supported by Saucony?

Every month one lucky reader gets a free pair of trainers by having their shoe question published as the "Question of the month" -- why don't you send in yours and you too could be sporting some great new footwear.

Have you got any questions about running shoes? Then make sure you email them in to shoeadvice@tri247.com and we will get the experts to answer them online!
