Welcome to the newsletter

Into February, and the (pre)season is definitely off and running now. Ironman World Champion Craig Alexander kicked off 2010 much as he finished 2009, by using his lightening fast run to secure another win at Ironman 70.3 Geelong in Australia. Closer to home, the Merrell TuffMan Duathlon certainly lived up to its name, and proved a fitting end to the Merrell Off Road Series, with XTERRA pro Sam Gardner taking a convincing win.

Performance of the weekend may well have to go to Hywel Davies however - and he was inside on a rowing machine! Never one to turn down a challenge, Hywel had set his sights on breaking the world record for 100km indoor rowing. He did it too, despite claiming it was the toughest thing he had ever done - and that includes winning Double Iron UK. Check out this YouTube video to get a sense of just what an effort it took. Hywel has an even bigger date this weekend - his wedding! Good luck and best wishes to Hywel and Julie.

Which is probably a good link into the big event coming up this weekend...if you love triathlon, what better than to spend Valentines weekend at Sandown Park for the annual TCR Show (www.tcrshow.com). We have been profiling the show for several weeks now, featuring many of the exhibitors and events which will be taking place - it promises to be bigger than ever. As well as all of the latest kit (and a lots of bargain offers), you can also visit the 220 Triathlon Magazine Theatre, for seminars and workshops including Chrissie Wellington and Dave 'The Man' Scott. The TCR Theatre will also include talks from the likes of Simon Ward and Karen Pickering MBE. Entries are still open for the Saucony 10km on Sunday, and you can also take part in the Multipower Indoor Time Trial, where you can win a training day with Will Clarke.

Winning is something that all attendees of the show can do this year. Your show goodie bag - collect it on arrival - will have an individual number on. Visit the Tri247 stand at the show (I35), and you could win one of OVER 200 prizes, including a triathlon holiday, running shoes, cycling shoes, helmets, nutrition products, race entries, heart monitors and more. One lucky winner can win £1000 to spend at the show, courtesy of www.allyouneedtotri.com, but remember, you can only win by checking your number at the Tri247 stand. Would be a shame to miss out, wouldn't it? As well as the show goodie bags, there are lots of other competitions and prizes to win at the exhibitor stands - check out this summary of what is on offer.

See you at the show - do drop by and say hello.

Weekend action

The weekend started off with some serious mud and a very challenging course at the fourth and final Merrell Off-Road Duathlon of the season - TuffMan. You can check out the official race report HERE, plus further stories from Jim McConnel and Colette O'Neill who both survivied - and enjoyed - the tough conditions.

Colin Dixon wasn't able to complete his grand slam of Merrell series races - despite taking a lead on the first run, he crashed out on the bike, and so it was XTERRA specialist Sam Gardner who took a decisive win, well over five minutes clear of Jim McConnel. Fay Cripps was the first lady home - improving on her second place at MudMan - with Claire Weldon second. Full results HERE.

The first championship event of the year took place on Saturday - the Lygna ETU Winter Triathlon European Championships, for which we have the elite results online HERE. In the age group races, British Triathlon Federation President and ITU Vice President Sarah Springman OBE took away a silver medal (W50-54), as did Tom Philips in M40-44. The World Champs in the Winter Triathlon discipline takes place next weekend, also in Norway.

Away from the mud, cold or snow, the main international race of the weekend was Ironman 70.3 Geelong in Australia. Reigning Ironman world champion Craig "Crowie" Alexander started the year in style, despite having to make up a five minute deficit at T2, to pull away to another win. Swiss athlete Caroline Steffen, fourth at the Ironman 70.3 world champs last season, and a new member of TeamTBB, dominated the bike leg, and then added a strong run to take a five minute victory, her first Ironman 70.3 title. We have a full report on the race HERE.

In other news - we profiled it in the weekend preview - and Hywel Davies delivered, breaking the indoor rowing 100km world record on Sunday. You can read all about it HERE, and do click-through and read his 'race' report. When a double-ironman winner describes it as the "hardest thing I've ever...", you can be sure this wasn't an easy task.

The event was also raising funds for two charities, and if you would like to congratulate Hywel on his efforts, I know he would appreciate you doing so by supporting his efforts on either of the following links:
