May 2017: Brian Fogarty

Racing doesn’t get much tougher than IRONMAN Lanzarote. Our winner for May, Brian Fogarty, produced a stunning performance in the Canary Islands and finished up as not just winner in his Age-Group, but the fastest Age-Group athlete of the day, finishing 11th overall, including the professional athletes.

His 4:58:03 bike split was the sixth fastest overall on the day, backed up with a 3:15:18 marathon which brought him to the finish in 9:22:57 – in some of the most brutal conditions for many years. A stunning performance from an athlete who is performing at the highest levels while balancing his work in the insurance industry.

Brian’s year has been more than just Lanzarote however, winning the 30-34 division at IRONMAN 70.3 Dubai in January, winning several time trial events and also the Horwich Triathlon by a full six minutes. Look out for him soon at IRONMAN UK in Bolton. On ‘home’ turf, he finished seventh overall last year – and will be looking to go faster again this time around.

Brian Fogarty

As well as a fine athlete, Brian is also highly respected by athletes of all levels, as reflected by this comment we received in a nomination for this award:

“Not only is Brian a superb athlete but he is one of the most grounded and down to earth blokes you could love to meet. Even while leading the age group race he still could be seen cheering on other athletes encouraging them on the course.”

A worthy winner from an already accomplished athlete for who we feel the best is still to come.
