Julie Derron

profile

Julie Derron has proven time and time again that she can perform at a world-class level across any triathlon distance she turns her hand to. Her roots might be in short course racing, but she’s successfully been able to mix in middle and long distance triathlon to achieve multiple podiums and victories.

Road to Paris 2024

Derron started racing in the youth/junior field in 2012 achieving multiple top 10 finishes, before stepping up into the elite field in 2018. Several years of consistency, including multiple wins and podium finishes in world cups and on the WTCS circuit culminate in her qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics. And while the world expected it to be a two-woman race between Cassandre Beaugrand and Beth Potter for 1st and 2nd place, Derron flipped the script with an incredible performance which saw her win the silver medal.

Long course career

What’s perhaps most impressive about Julie Derron is her ability to perform across a range of distances. Many would assume she’d had to focus fully on the Olympic distance to attain that silver medal. But Derron is a master of versatility and successfully mixed in longer distance racing alongside her Olympic campaign. In 2021 she took on some middle distance racing, finishing 2nd at IRONMAN 70.3 Switzerland, 1st at Gerardmer XL and 3rd at IRONMAN 70.3 Portugal.

In 2022 Derron finished 5th at the PTO Canadian Open, defended her title at Gerardmer XL and came 2nd at Clash Daytona. She also took on the full Iron distance for the first time at IRONMAN Italy, where she finished 2nd.

2023 was to be a quieter year for Derron, after a major hip injury took her out of racing for much of the year. But in 2024, the Swiss athlete was back in full form in a year which saw a seriously impressive number of podium finishes added to her triathlon CV alongside that Olympic silver medal. That included wins at IRONMAN 70.3 Switzerland and Challenge Walchsee, three 2nd place finishes on the T100 circuit and 5th place at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship.

In 2025, Derron turned most of her focus to the T100 Triathlon World Tour series. 2 wins and a 2nd place took her to the start line of the T100 World Championship final in Qatar as one of the main contenders to win the overall title, alongside Brits Kate Waugh and Lucy Charles-Barclay. A dominant performance from Waugh saw Derron finish in 3rd – not enough to take the overall crown but a performance that secured her 3rd place overall.

It wasn’t all about the 100km in 2025 though, Derron also took the win at IRONMAN Vitoria-Gasteiz and IRONMAN 70.3 Langkawi.
