Two-time Olympic triathlon gold medallist Alistair Brownlee completed the 111km The Gralloch gravel race in South Ayreshire, Scotland over the weekend.

It was the latest expedition for the swim/bike/run legend as he continues to push his boundaries following a sensational triathlon career.

At the start of May, Brownlee suffered a painful crash at the Traka 360 gravel race in Spain, but recovered well enough to take part in the Scottish event over the weekend.

Puncture halts Bronwlee’s ride

Described as a “true gravel classic” which makes up part of the of the UCL Gravel World Series Event, the top 25% of riders in their age group/category qualified for the UCL World Championships scheduled for the Netherlands in October.

Bronwlee, who competed in the Elite race, finished 34th in his category and 45th overall in a time of 3:32:55, despite suffering from a puncture.

The race was won by Czechia cyclist Petr Vakoc – who suffered a puncture of his own – ahead of Matt Holmes (GBR) and Benjamin Perry (CAN).

Despite the issues with the bike, Brownlee was happy with his performance on the gravel tracks of Scotland.

He posted on Instagram: “Pretty chilled day out at The Gralloch, and really enjoyed it. Amazing route, great atmosphere, and just one little puncture to deal with along the way. Can’t ask for much more. Always grateful to be out on the gravel”

The Gralloch is the latest escapade on the Alistair Brownlee post-retirement tour following his attempt at the Traka 360 and a Three Peaks Challenge podium.

Earlier in 2025, the Olympic legend detailed a number of events on his “bucket list” following the end of his professional triathlon career – with long distance biking and ultramarathons mentioned.

He hinted at a venture into the world of “survival-sport crossover multi-day events” that test endurance and mental capacity. It’ll be interesting to see what’s next for the 37-year-old.

Astle in action

Fellow British triathlon talent Ruth Astle also took on the challenge competing in the women’s elite category.

Astle confirmed on Instagram over the weekend she’d be on the start list for a “couple” of gravel races before she returns to IRONMAN action.
