Kyle Smith declared himself “back on the rise” after a commanding victory at Challenge Barcelona, while Anastacia Damm Nielsen claimed her first professional win following a thrilling battle with Marta Bernardi.

New Zealand’s Smith made his decisive move early on the bike before completing a solo effort to win in 3:30:39, finishing 4:22 clear of Switzerland’s Sven Thalmann, with Germany’s Jannik Schaufler third.

The women’s race went right down to the wire, with Denmark’s Nielsen overcoming a dropped chain late on the bike and edging out Bernardi by just five seconds.

Calm seas and sunny conditions greeted more than 4,000 athletes across the weekend on the Catalan coastline, with an international professional field of more than 70.

Men’s race – Smith takes control on the bike

Thalmann led the one-lap swim at Mar Bella Beach in 23:54, with Schaufler, Smith and Maximilian Krüger close behind.

Smith wasted little time making his move. After a quick transition, he took the lead in the opening kilometres of the flat bike course and began to pull away.

By 30km, his advantage had grown to more than two minutes over a chase group featuring Thalmann, Schaufler, Gaspard Tharreau and Pamphiel Pareyn among others.

There was no catching the Kiwi, who completed the bike in 1:50:42 and reached T2 more than five minutes clear. Denmark’s Thor Bendix Madsen started the run in second, 20 seconds ahead of Schaufler.

Smith remained firmly in control on the three-lap run along the seafront promenade, holding a six-minute advantage at halfway as temperatures rose.

Behind him, the podium positions were changing. Schaufler moved into second before being caught by Thalmann, with José Ignacio Gálvez Ponce also in contention.

Smith crossed the line in 3:30:39 to seal an emphatic win, while Thalmann secured second in 3:35:01. Schaufler completed the podium in 3:35:40, ahead of Gálvez Ponce and France’s Keran Gallou.

“It was a good day and felt really good,” said Smith. “I am back on the rise after a pretty tough year.”

The first big indication of that return to form came when he was second to compatriot Hayden Wilde at T100 French Riviera last month but this was Smith’s first victory since he won Challenge Family’s ‘The Championship’ in 2024.

Women’s race – Nielsen edges Bernardi in sprint finish

Spain’s Maria Vilas set the early pace, leading out of the water in under 27 minutes with French athletes Maëla Moison and Eva Marsac around 20 seconds behind.

The top five remained within a minute in the opening kilometres of the bike, before Nielsen closed the gap on the second lap and joined Moison at the front.

Italy’s Bernardi also moved into the leading group, which built an advantage of around 2:20 over the chasers heading towards T2.

But there was late drama for two of the leaders. Nielsen dropped her chain with just 750 metres of the bike remaining, managing to fix it quickly and get back into contention.

Vilas then fell at the dismount line after reaching the end of the bike first from the group. She got back up and began the run alongside Bernardi, Nielsen and Moison.

Nielsen led at the first run turning point, with Bernardi just 10 seconds behind and Vilas a minute down.

The Dane and the Italian would prove a class apart on foot, both producing half-marathon splits in the 1:17s as their battle continued through the closing kilometres.

Running shoulder-to-shoulder late in the race, they were separated by just five seconds at the finish as Nielsen’s final effort secured her first professional victory in 4:00:59. Bernardi followed in 4:01:04.

“It was such a close and hard battle,” said Nielsen. “In the last 500m, I sprinted as hard as I could.

“I dropped my chain on the bike, but I managed to put it back quickly and get back into the race.”

Germany’s Katharina Krüger claimed the final podium place in 4:07:28 after overtaking Vilas with 2km remaining. Vilas finished fourth, with Carolin Meyer completing the top five.
