Aurélia Boulanger of France and America’s Ari Klau were the winners of IRONMAN 70.3 Mont-Tremblant near Quebec in Canada.
The fields were almost exclusively North American at what was virtually the last chance to seal a place at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships in Nice.
But Boulanger was one of two Europeans in the women’s line up and finished more than five minutes ahead of her nearest rival while Klau claimed his first-ever pro win, a month after his runner-up spot at IRONMAN 70.3 Chattanooga.
Men’s pro race
It was Joshua Berles (GER) who led out the swim in 23:08 at which point Klau was 24th and nearly three minutes behind.
Klau was in bib #2 but the highest-ranked athlete after his compatriot Trevor Foley, the winner of both IRONMAN New Zealand and 70.3 Pennysylvania this season, swerved the race.
It’s on the bike and run where Klau normally comes to the fore and after T1 he soon started to motor, moving up to eighth after 33km, now less than two minutes back.
That was down to a minute two thirds of the way through the bike and by T2 he was third, just 15 seconds adrift of Berles.
Pretty much straight after the start of the run Klau was in front and in complete command – two minutes up at halfway.
He maintained that to the finish, his 1:08 half marathon comfortably the quickest and that saw him come home 2:26 ahead of Blake Harris (CAN) in second and Luke Jones (USA) in third.
Women’s pro race
Boulanger has four previous middle-distance wins to her name but this comfortably topped them all.
Margarita Ryan (USA) was first out of the water in 23:55, with Boulanger 3:44 back at that point.
However she had erased all of that deficit just 33km into the bike as she moved into the lead.
By the time the field reached T2 Boulanger was just over a minute in front of Lisa Becharas (USA) and she then put the hammer down on the run – the gap was over four minutes at halfway and by the finish it was Lydia Russell (USA) who had moved up to second, 5:01 back, relegating Becharas to third at +8:42.
