An impressive field of star athletes will line up for IRONMAN Kalmar next month, with some chasing crucial Pro Series points and others making one final bid to qualify for Kona.
The 13th rankings event of the season will also serve as ideal preparation for the World Championships, which take place on the Big Island at the start of October, and there are plenty of big names eyeing the opportunity to hone their skills around the Swedish coastal city.
One of those athletes looking to pick up some much-needed race time is German Laura Philipp, who is set for a return to competition after what has been something of a stop-start campaign so far.
Philipp looking for Kona boost
Injury and illness have limited her to just one full-distance and one 70.3 outing in 2026, but she did achieve podium finishes both times – third in Pays d’Aix and second in Hamburg – and will be keen to test her fitness ahead of Hawaii, where she finished third last time out.
In-form reigning Kalmar champion Katrine Græsbøll Christensen (DEN) will be a tough opponent, however, as she returns to defend her title, having already achieved full-distance podiums in South Africa (2nd) and Hamburg (3rd) as well as a runners-up spot at 70.3 Elsinore last month.
Philipp and Christensen last went head-to-head in Hamburg, when after an impressive bike from the Dane, Philipp produced her trademark marathon performance to sweep up Christensen in the early stages of the run to take second.
Local hopes will be pinned on Sara Svensk (SWE). Svensk has proven that she is well capable of competing against the world’s top triathletes, following a strong performance at the IRONMAN Texas North American Championship earlier this year, where she finished sixth.
Can Zilinskas build on Lake Placid?
Representing the USA will be Jackie Hering and Rachel Zilinskas; Hering has enjoyed a consistent season of five top-ten finishes, including a win at IRONMAN 70.3 Dallas-Little Elm and a third place at IRONMAN 70.3 Chattanooga, while Zilinskas comes hot off a third-place finish in Lake Placid.
As one of the strongest swimmers in the professional field, Zilinskas could look to establish an early advantage in the water and force the powerful cyclists behind her into chase mode.
A strong German contingent featuring Franziska Hofmann, Leonie Konczalla, Johanna Ahrens and Jenny Jendryschik will further strengthen the 30-plus athlete field.
Hofmann arrives as the reigning IRONMAN Wales champion, while Ahrens returns after securing sixth place in Kalmar last year.
Final chance for Big Island slot
While many of the race favourites have already secured the IRONMAN World Championship slot, Kalmar presents a last-chance opportunity for the likes of Leonie Konczalla, Rebecca Clarke (NZL), Jeanne Collonge (FRA) and Jenny Jendryschik (DEU).
Leading a stacked men’s professional field of over seventy athletes will be the American duo of Matthew Marquardt and Trevor Foley, both of whom last competed at Lake Placid, where Marquardt finished second behind Belgium’s Marten Van Riel.
Jonas Schomburg (GER), one of the sport’s most dynamic racers, is also an exciting addition to the start list and will be expected to lead from the front as he works to establish an advantage over the Americans.
Fellow short-course star and Olympian, Pierre Le Corre (FRA), will also no doubt help shape the early dynamics, ensuring a fast and aggressive race from the outset. Le Corre came second on his IRONMAN debut in New Zealand earlier this year and will be a strong podium contender.
Tactics will be crucial in Kalmar
While Schomburg and Le Corre are likely to drive the pace early, athletes such as Matt Hanson (USA) and Antonio Benito Lopez (ESP) will be playing their usual game of patience as they wait to deploy their dynamic run strength on the marathon and move into contention.
Germany’s Finn Große-Freese and Jonas Hoffmann, together with Finland’s Henrik Goesch, are among the highest-ranked athletes in the field still seeking Kona qualification, meaning a strong performance in Sweden could prove decisive in their last-chance pursuit of a slot.
