Gustav Iden kept his emotions in check through a relentless pursuit of the IRONMAN World Championship title. But when he crossed the finish line in Kona, they came pouring out.

The Norwegian was racing in a new pink and white tri-suit in memory of his mother, who died of cancer three years ago. After recording the fastest marathon of the men’s race, he finished second to Vincent Luis – a podium which carried significance far beyond the result.

“This race I’m wearing a special suit to honour my mother who died of cancer three years ago,” he explained afterwards.

“And I’m not going to make this a story about myself. We all do sports for our own reason, but it was just so emotional.”

‘I thought the race was gone’

Iden’s challenge had been complicated by a three-minute drafting penalty on the bike, leaving the 2022 Kona champion with a substantial deficit entering the marathon.

Asked when he began to believe victory was possible, he made it clear that it had not been at the start of the run.

“Starting nine minutes behind, I thought the race was gone, especially being three minutes behind Kristian or even more.”

But as the marathon unfolded, the race began to come back towards him.

Sam Laidlow withdrew after struggling with a problem affecting his left leg, while long-time leader Magnus Ditlev slowed dramatically. Luis moved into first place, with Iden working his way through the field behind him.

“I started to think it was possible when I first heard Magnus was walking,” Iden said.

“I started believing when I started to catch Vince. But I tried everything I got, and in the end I was glad to make it to the finish line because this race here is brutal.”

Luis comes within sight

For a spell, Iden appeared capable of completing another remarkable Kona comeback.

He could see Luis ahead, and the gap narrowed to around 40 seconds late in the marathon. But the Frenchman found enough to pull away again as Iden began to struggle.

“I could see Vince in front of me and I was thinking, ‘This is my day’,” he said in his finish-line interview.

“But it was so brutal in the end and I was really happy to make it to the finish line in second.”

Reflecting further afterwards, Iden pinpointed the moment when chasing victory became a battle simply to finish.

“I knew that it was going to be tough because I was starting to fade quite badly.

“But at the last uphill before Palani, then I knew this isn’t possible. Then I just wanted to get to the finish line, and it seemed so far away.”

Luis ultimately won by 1:35, with Matthew Marquardt third at +2:31. Like Iden, the American had served a three-minute drafting penalty on the bike.

Those penalties inevitably prompted questions about what might have been, but Iden was clear in his praise for the new champion, calling Luis “an absolutely worthy winner”.

The emotion came at the finish

Asked what his mother’s memory had given him during the hardest moments, Iden explained that he had remained focused on the practical demands of racing.

“During the race I felt like I was quite objective and businesslike. I managed to think about my power and getting enough liquid in.

“But just the moment I crossed the finish line, that’s where I got super emotional.”

His tribute had accompanied him throughout the day, but it was only once the effort was over that he could fully absorb its meaning.

“It was a super special day with a lot of charity work and stuff,” he added.

“I’m happy I could deliver a podium in her memory.”

A Series crown alongside his Kona podium

There was another reward for Iden’s performance: his second place also secured the IRONMAN Pro Series title and its $200,000 winner’s bonus.

His marathon of 2:36:58 was the fastest of the men’s race, taking him to a finishing time of 7:49:03.

Before Kona, Iden had told TRI247’s Laura Siddall that his ideal race would involve chasing throughout the day and taking the lead only near the finish.

“Just chase the whole day and then snatch the victory towards the very end,” was how he described it.

He came close to making that vision a reality. Ultimately, however, this was a day remembered as much for the emotion behind his performance as the pursuit itself – and a podium delivered in his mother’s memory.
