World Championship medallist dies following horrific bike crash

Julia Viellehner, a German duathlete and triathlete who took the silver medal behind Great Britain’s Emma Pooley at the 2015 ITU Powerman Long Distance Duathlon Championships in Zofingen, has died as a result of injuries sustained when hit by a heavy goods vehicle while cycling in Italy.

As well as her multisport exploits, Viellehner was also a successful runner, including winning the Munich Marathon in 2015.

This horrible news also comes on the same day as the death of former Moto GP champion, Nicky Hayden, also from injuries sustained while cycling, also in Italy.
