Cassandre Beaugrand produced a brilliant all-round display to claim the $100,000 first prize at the $800,000 Supertri Pro Series Finals in Jersey.
The French superstar came into the race having won all four of her WTCS starts this season and underlined her status as the woman to beat with another superb performance over the frantic Enduro format – three successive swim, bike and runs, with no rests in between.
But she was made to work incredibly hard for it, particularly on the bike, as British duo Georgia Taylor-Brown and Jess Fullagar repeatedly put the pressure on the Olympic champion.
In the end Beaugrand’s devastating run speed proved decisive as she powered clear on the final leg, with Taylor-Brown taking an excellent second and defending champion Jeanne Lehair (LUX) rounding out the podium in third.
Stage 1
With the pontoon positions decided by a random draw, conditions had warmed up a little by the time the women dived into the Jersey marina, with the water at 17 degrees and the air temperature 19 degrees.
And it didn’t take long for Beaugrand to make her presence felt.
The Frenchwoman quickly moved half a length clear during the opening 300m swim, while Lehair – resplendent in the pink trisuit of the reigning champion – found herself towards the back of a line of five early on.
Beaugrand was first to the turn and still led as they headed back through the marina, with compatriot Emma Lombardi now on her feet.
After the steep ramp up towards transition it was Beaugrand first, British U23 athlete Eve Whitaker second and Jolien Vermeylen (BEL) third.
Beaugrand was then quickest over the mount line to earn the first Short Chute, but Whitaker soon surged past her on the bike and began opening a small gap.
The youngster was producing a hugely impressive display until slipping on a U-turn midway through the bike. She was quickly back aboard, but it allowed Beaugrand to bridge back up.
And the race would soon change again.
Whitaker suffered a much heavier second crash and dropped right back, while Taylor-Brown and Fullagar moved to the front and began working superbly together.
Beaugrand appeared a little more tentative on the technical bike course and was now third alongside Vermeylen.
Fullagar won the battle for the second Short Chute and then stole a couple of seconds on Taylor-Brown heading onto the run.
Vermeylen was third at +9.85, Beaugrand fourth at +12.05, Lombardi fifth at +17.63, Olivia Mathias (GBR) sixth at +18.70 and Lehair seventh at +19.36, with Whitaker now more than 20 seconds back.
But this was where Beaugrand’s extraordinary run speed came into play.
She rapidly erased the deficit before surging past Fullagar and Taylor-Brown, who had been running virtually shoulder-to-shoulder.
Behind them Eleanor Beveridge (USA) became the first athlete eliminated under the 90-second rule.
By the closing stages of the two-lap run Beaugrand had opened a small advantage and, while she couldn’t earn another Short Chute, she ensured nobody else could claim it either.
So after a breathless opening third of the race it was Beaugrand who headed back towards the water five seconds clear of Taylor-Brown and Fullagar.
Léonie Périault (FRA) had run her way up to fourth at +9.72, with Lehair continuing her recovery to sit fifth at +12.47.
Stage 2
There was another elimination before the second stage really got going as local athlete Siena Stephens saw her race come to an end.
At the front, meanwhile, Beaugrand again looked supremely comfortable in the water.
Taylor-Brown and Fullagar struggled to stay on her feet as the Frenchwoman controlled the second swim, emerging with a two-second advantage over Taylor-Brown and nearly four seconds on Fullagar.
The big question was whether she could withstand another assault on the bike.
And it didn’t take long for Taylor-Brown and Fullagar to overhaul her before once again working together at the front.
Beaugrand was soon almost joined by Lehair, with the pair around four seconds behind the leading duo on the third of four laps.
The eliminations were now coming thick and fast too, with Mackenzie McConagha (USA), Lottie James (GBR) and Michelle Magnani (USA) all seeing their races ended as the field was steadily whittled down.
Lehair was looking increasingly dangerous and left Beaugrand to do much of the work as they tried to keep Taylor-Brown and Fullagar within range.
But coming off the bike the British pair remained inseparable.
Lehair was third at +5.66, Beaugrand fourth at +8.90, while Périault, Lombardi and Vermeylen were all around half a minute adrift.
And then came a familiar sight.
Beaugrand once again began eating into the deficit on the run, although the intriguing question was how much those repeated efforts were taking out of the Olympic champion.
By the end of Stage 2 there was virtually nothing between Beaugrand, Taylor-Brown, Fullagar and Lehair – and the medals increasingly looked to be between that quartet.
Stage 3
Lehair led the way back into the water for the final stage, with Beaugrand fourth after briefly pausing in transition to take on fluids.
Behind them the field continued to shrink, with Whitaker the latest athlete eliminated following those two costly crashes earlier in the race.
That left just 10 of the original 16 still racing.
Lehair continued to lead during the final swim, with Beaugrand, Taylor-Brown and Fullagar lined up behind her.
Just six seconds separated the leading four early on what promised to be a pivotal final bike leg, while Périault had made up significant ground in the water and was now +18.02.
Then came a potentially race-changing moment.
Fullagar rode into the back of Taylor-Brown starting the bike and lost virtually all her momentum. Taylor-Brown also lost some time, but it was Fullagar who paid the much bigger price – and the incident played perfectly into the hands of Lehair and, especially, Beaugrand.
Taylor-Brown had worked her way back to Beaugrand and Lehair by the end of the first of four laps, but Fullagar was now nine seconds adrift in fourth.
Taylor-Brown moved to the front but, crucially, she no longer had Fullagar alongside her to share the workload and the leading trio remained together on lap two.
Beaugrand and Fullagar were also the only women armed with Short Chutes, putting the Frenchwoman in an increasingly strong position.
More eliminations followed until just seven athletes remained.
Taylor-Brown still hadn’t managed to shake Beaugrand as they entered transition for the final time, although Lehair had slipped fractionally behind in third.
Beaugrand was actually first out onto the run, just ahead of Taylor-Brown, while Lehair suddenly had an unusual problem of her own – her helmet had become caught in her hair and she was forced to carry it with her around the opening lap.
Up ahead Beaugrand wasn’t hanging around.
She immediately opened a clear advantage over Taylor-Brown and Lehair and still had her Short Chute in hand.
The Olympic champion took it at the start of the second and final lap and, barring disaster, the $100,000 first prize was hers.
Instead, it was Lehair who suffered another setback.
The Luxembourg star attempted to put her helmet back into her box but it bounced out, forcing her to turn around and replace it to avoid a penalty.
She had been right on Taylor-Brown’s tail before that moment, but suddenly the podium order looked set.
And so it proved.
Beaugrand was able to enjoy something approaching a victory lap as a brilliant display across all three stages earned her the biggest payday of her career.
Taylor-Brown was rewarded for a superb performance with second place and $75,000, while defending champion Lehair took third and $60,000.
Fullagar came home fourth after playing such a huge role in shaping the race, leaving the question of just how costly that final-bike mishap had proved.
Périault and Lombardi were a distant fifth and sixth respectively, with Vermeylen seventh as the remainder of the field had their races ended by the elimination rule.
