HYROX has taken a significant step in its push towards the Olympics after agreeing a partnership which brings Hybrid Racing into the World Triathlon family.
The deal recognises the discipline, which combines running with functional fitness workouts, under triathlon’s international governing body – and sets out plans for three different race formats.
It also creates opportunities for national triathlon federations to organise events, including age-group national championships, potentially giving athletes another way to compete within the multisport structure.
HYROX co-founder and chief executive Christian Toetzke declared the sport “officially on the road to the Olympics” while World Triathlon president Antonio Arimany described Hybrid Racing as “a natural evolution for our movement”.
Three formats, one new discipline
The agreement introduces three versions of Hybrid Racing: Ultimate, Fast and Ultra.
Ultimate will mirror the existing HYROX competition format. Fast is described as a shorter, higher-intensity version, while Ultra will offer an extended endurance challenge.
All three will be sanctioned and governed by World Triathlon, with the formats developed jointly with HYROX. Exact distances and workout details for Fast and Ultra were not included in the announcement.
HYROX will be the exclusive operator of the official elite World, Continental and National Championships in the Ultimate format, incorporating those titles into its existing elite competition structure.
That distinction matters: the exclusive championship role specified in the agreement relates to elite athletes racing Ultimate.
National federations will have the opportunity to organise events across all three formats, including National Championships for age-group athletes.
Why it matters for triathlon
For World Triathlon, the partnership offers a route to reach athletes whose sporting lives revolve around running and gym-based training.
For its national federations, there’s the opportunity to develop their own Hybrid Racing events, creating another potential entry point into the wider multisport community, with Arimany saying the agreement would help federations grow participation and engage new audiences.
“This agreement is the result of a full year of dedicated work between World Triathlon and HYROX, and it is enormously gratifying to see it move from negotiation into reality,” he said.

The practical question now is how those opportunities translate into race calendars, championship pathways and events that athletes can enter.
Is HYROX heading to the Olympics?
That is the ambition – but there is no confirmed Games appearance or target edition in the announcement.
World Triathlon and HYROX say they will work towards inclusion in Multi-Sport Games, with the ultimate aim of reaching both the Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Toetzke said: “From the very beginning, our goal was to build a standardized, global sport that could earn a place on the world’s biggest athletic stage.
“Partnering with World Triathlon is a monumental step toward that vision.”
The agreement gives that ambition a formal governing framework. Olympic inclusion, however, remains subject to a separate selection process.
There is also more work to complete on the partnership itself. The organisations have signed a term sheet, with a Long Form Agreement still to follow setting out the full operational, governance and commercial arrangements.
For athletes, the immediate development is the recognition of Hybrid Racing within World Triathlon – with the detail of how the new structure will work still to come.
