UPDATE: Since this article was published, Alex Yee, Vasco Vilaça and Beth Potter have dropped off the start lists. We’ll have a full preview and revised fields a few days before the respective races.

Alex Yee, Hayden Wilde, Matthew Hauser and newly crowned world champion Vasco Vilaça headline a star-studded men’s start list for next month’s rearranged WTCS Abu Dhabi.

Seven of the top eight in the final men’s 2026 World Triathlon Championship Series standings are entered for the sprint-distance race on Friday November 13, with Hudayriyat Island again hosting the action.

And there is plenty of quality in the women’s field too, with Beth Potter, Lisa Tertsch and Kate Waugh among the leading names – although France’s world and Olympic champion Cassandre Beaugrand is a notable absentee.

An unusual WTCS date

Abu Dhabi had originally been scheduled to open the WTCS season in March, but the elite races were postponed because of the conflict in the Middle East.

Its November return creates an unusual situation, with the 2026 world titles already secured by Vilaça and Beaugrand at September’s Grand Final in Pontevedra.

But there is still plenty at stake as Olympic qualification and World Triathlon Ranking points will be available, giving athletes further incentive as they build towards Los Angeles 2028. Though World Triathlon have confirmed to us that the race won’t count towards next year’s new T50 World Tour.

The individual sprint races take place on November 13, followed by the Mixed Relay on Saturday November 14. The event will run alongside the World Triathlon Multisport Championships on Hudayriyat Island.

Men: Big four set for another showdown

The men’s entries promise another meeting between four of the sport’s biggest names, with Vilaça, Hauser, Yee and Wilde all on the initial list.

Their last WTCS encounter in Pontevedra produced a spectacular finish, with Hauser edging Vilaça on the line as the Portuguese star secured his first world title.

Olympic champion Yee finished just four seconds behind in third after a remarkable charge through the field on the run, while Wilde took fifth.

And there is another compelling reference point: last year’s Abu Dhabi race, when Wilde beat Hauser by just two seconds, with Vilaça completing the podium.

All three are entered again, while Yee is another major contender after missing the 2025 edition during his London Marathon preparations.

The depth extends well beyond that quartet. World championship bronze medallist Ricardo Batista is joined by Miguel Hidalgo, Alberto González García and Luke Willian, meaning seven of the top eight in the final series standings are represented.

Dorian Coninx is the exception, with no French athletes currently listed in either individual race. France is also absent from the initial Mixed Relay entries.

Morgan Pearson, Tim Hellwig, Henry Graf and David Cantero del Campo are among the other notable men entered.

Yee heads a five-strong British contingent alongside Max Stapley, Oliver Conway, Jack Willis and Harry Leleu.

Women: Potter, Tertsch and Waugh lead the names

The women’s race features four of the top 10 from the final WTCS standings, led by overall runner-up Potter and fourth-placed Tertsch.

Jeanne Lehair, seventh in the championship, and Diana Isakova, 10th, are also entered.

Beaugrand’s absence means there will be no appearance from the woman who completed a perfect five-from-five WTCS campaign in Pontevedra. Fellow French stars Léonie Périault and Emma Lombardi are missing too, while Georgia Taylor-Brown, Tilda Månsson and Taylor Spivey are other notable names absent from the current list.

But defending Abu Dhabi champion Tertsch returns to the scene of last year’s German podium sweep, when she edged Nina Eim and Laura Lindemann in a finish which saw just two seconds separate the trio.

Lindemann is entered again, alongside German team-mates Tanja Neubert and Franka Rust, although Eim is not currently listed.

Waugh brings both recent form and happy Abu Dhabi memories. She finished third at the Pontevedra Grand Final, one place ahead of Potter, and it was in Abu Dhabi that she claimed the world U23 title in 2022.

Potter and Waugh are joined by Sophie Evans, Olivia Mathias and Sian Rainsley, matching the men’s five British entries.

Rio 2016 Olympic champion Gwen Jorgensen adds further interest as she continues her pursuit of a place at her home Games in Los Angeles. Before Abu Dhabi, the American wears bib #1 at this weekend’s World Cup race in Beijing, another step in an increasingly competitive battle among the US women.

Bianca Seregni, Jolien Vermeylen and Therese Feuersinger are among the other names to watch in a field which currently contains 48 athletes.

Note that with a month still to go, the initial start lists are very much subject to change.
