Organisers of the World Triathlon Multisport Championships have confirmed the 2024 edition will be held in Townsville, Australia.

The North Queensland town is set to welcome thousands of athletes from around the world as they take part in the 10-day event.

Official dates for the 2024 World Triathlon Multisport Championships have yet to be confirmed, but the announcement has been widely welcomed in Australia.

Aussie rules?

World Triathlon President and IOC member Marisol Casado says she was delighted that Queensland was set to host another World Triathlon event, with the area previously staging the likes of the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Gold Coast 2018.

Casado explained: “Being able to hold these important races in one fantastic location and all under the banner of one festival has proved to be hugely beneficial for athletes, spectators and media alike, allowing the global World Triathlon family the opportunity to gather together for a true celebration of the sport, and we are extremely excited to head to Townsville in 2024.”

Miles Stewart OAM OLY, CEO at Triathlon Australia expects to see the largest Australian team on record at the 2024 event.

Stewart confirmed that qualification for the event will begin next year and hopes it can add to Australia’s triathlon legacy.

He said: “Australia has some of the best triathlon events in the world, and we can’t wait to welcome the world’s best to Townsville, and continue to build on our legacy of hosting world-class events.”

Multiple options

The World Triathlon Multisport Championships will include events in duathlon, long distance triathlon, long distance aquabike, aquathlon, cross triathlon and cross duathlon World Championship races.

Athletes can compete in various multisport races instead of opting for just one event, meaning participants can even vie for the Multisport Legend, a title reserved for those who compete in four events.

The first World Triathlon Multisport Championships were held in Penticton, Canada, in 2017, with this year’s edition heading to Romania and Slovakia before it is held in Ibiza, Spain, in 2023 when it will return to the original format of all races in one location during a 10-day festival.
