In ground-breaking news, the Professional Triathletes Organisation (PTO) has announced it has acquired a majority shareholding in Challenge Family from Y11 Sport & Media, to make it a key part of the newly-launched Triathlon World Tour.

The Triathlon World Tour was unveiled in December 2025 by the PTO and the sport’s governing body World Triathlon, the latest step in the 12-year strategic partnership between the two organisations with the aim of growing the sport longer term.

The vision to create the Triathlon World Tour came in response to the key findings of World Triathlon’s Deloitte Report which sought to ‘reimagine the future of triathlon’. It highlighted a fragmented ecosystem and recommended a change from a technically driven model to a commercially driven one.

And in terms of middle and long-distance triathlon there have been three major organisations in recent years who showcase professional races alongside mass-participation events – IRONMAN, the PTO with their T100 races and Challenge Family. So this latest news is a significant step as three becomes two.

‘Single brand’

PTO CEO Sam Renouf said: “This acquisition and investment into Challenge Family is a significant moment in the PTO journey.

“As we make the Triathlon World Tour a reality alongside our partners, World Triathlon, to create a single brand and competition structure that helps professionals, amateurs, fans, media, sponsors and other stakeholders more clearly understand and engage with our sport.

“Challenge Family’s respected event platform, community-driven ethos and operational expertise make them a natural partner, in addition to a shared vision to transform the sport and unlock its untapped commercial potential. I look forward to working closely with Jort [Challenge Family CEO], his dedicated team and their community of passionate race partners around the world to make this happen.”

‘An important evolution’

Responding to the news, Jort Vlam, CEO of Challenge Family, said: “Challenge Family and our race partners have spent more than two decades building a global series defined by strong local communities, athlete-first experiences, and a commitment to innovation.

“Joining forces with the PTO marks an important evolution in that journey. This partnership allows us to preserve what makes Challenge Family unique while contributing to a unified, globally recognized series that strengthens the sport’s long-term growth, commercial sustainability and global visibility.

“We are excited to work closely with the PTO, World Triathlon, and our race organisers worldwide to help shape a more connected, professional and inspiring future for triathlon.”

The fine print and details going forward

The Triathlon World Tour will start in 2027 and present a clear competition structure that combines the existing T100 Triathlon World Tour and the World Triathlon Championship Series (WTCS) rebranded as the T100 and T50 World Championship Series respectively. With two newly formed ‘Challenger’ series sitting beneath each of them and providing a clear qualification pathway to become an official World Champion at both distances.

The PTO aims to grow the Triathlon World Tour to approximately 80 events from 2027 onwards.

The full schedule of more than 35 Challenge Family events in 2026 – following the successful Challenge Sir Bani Yas event in Abu Dhabi at the end of January – will continue under the Challenge Family brand for the rest of the year as the two companies continue to plan for 2027.

Commenting on the expansion, World Triathlon President Antonio F. Arimany said: “World Triathlon is immensely proud of our strategic partnership with the PTO as we continue to build the Triathlon World Tour. By incorporating more events and welcoming more private event organisers to the Tour, we are creating a more unified and robust ecosystem for our sport.

“This expansion will provide significantly more opportunities for athletes to compete on a global stage and will also unlock greater commercial opportunities for all stakeholders, ensuring a sustainable and thriving future for triathlon at every level.”

The PTO and World Triathlon say they will unveil further details of the new Triathlon World Tour, including branding, tiered competition structure and organisational set‑up, at an event in the first half of 2026, when fans, athletes, media and partners will be able to see, in one place, how a unified Triathlon World Tour will bring together the best of our sport into a single, compelling global format.

TRI247’s initial view

Today’s announcement frequently references being “more connected”, a “single brand” and having a “shared vision”.

And there’s no doubt that in a matter of a few months the top-level triathlon landscape has changed dramatically.

On the one hand we still have the biggest single name in the sport in IRONMAN.

But now the sport’s governing body in World Triathlon, the PTO and Challenge Family have effectively joined forces to create that Triathlon World Tour from 2027 onwards.

There is also no doubt that mass-participation races are the revenue driver in the sport – just look at the pivot from innovative short-course specialists Supertri this year as the latest indication of that. They now only have only one standalone professional race in 2026 compared to a growing portfolio of some of the biggest mass-participation triathlons around the world.

And today’s news is a further consolidation – but what it means from a professional / elite point of view remains to be seen.

The PTO have been the disruptor – or a catalyst for change – since their emergence and IRONMAN have had to respond. Would the IRONMAN Pro Series have happened without the lucrative prize purses on offer in T100 racing for example?

Time will tell but things are changing at a rapid pace and there’s little doubt that what was a hugely confusing and fragmented landscape is starting to look a lot more structured and commercially sustainable. Hopefully that is to everyone’s benefit – amateurs, pros and fans.

But a final quick point – one race that has been conspicuous by its absence in any of these press releases is Challenge Roth, often called the jewel in Challenge Family’s crown but owned by TEAMCHALLENGE GmbH, which is led by the Walchshöfer family who organise Roth.

It’s the next biggest full-distance race out there after the IRONMAN World Championship and a Challenge Family spokesperson confirmed to us: “While a flagship race of Challenge Family, the ownership of Challenge Roth remains unchanged.”

And later Felix Walchshöfer clarified: “DATEV Challenge Roth is and will remain an independent race.

“Organized by Felix, Kathrin and Alice Walchshöfer together with a 16-strong team, rooted in Roth and open to triathlon fans from all over the world.

“For more than 40 years, triathlon in Roth has stood for a world-class sporting event. Since 2002, the race has been organized as Challenge Roth by the Walchshöfer family and their team, fully independent and autonomous from Roth.

“As a result, DATEV Challenge Roth is not affected by the current developments involving the Challenge Family.

“At the same time, we maintain respectful, positive and cooperative relationships with the Professional Triathletes Organization, Ironman, the Challenge Family, as well as many other race organizers and governing bodies; Roth is looking forward to continuing the collaboration.”
