Paula Findlay
profile
Born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1989, Paula Findlay is one of the finest triathletes to come from the North American country.
Having started out as a swimmer, Paula began running in high school before her running coach suggested she tried out triathlon. Findlay then entered her first triathlon at the age of 16 in 2006, and later qualified for that year’s Junior World Championships in Lausanne.
The Canadian won countless races in ITU competition, finishing in the top 10 in both the 2010 and 2011 ITU World Championship Series before competing for Canada at the London 2012 Olympic Games.
In more recent years, Findlay has focused on middle distance racing. With multiple victories on the IRONMAN 70.3 circuit, including 2nd place at the 2022 World Championship, Paula is often mixing it up at the front of T100 races. Known for her impeccably strong bike leg, Findlay has also represented Team Canada in cycling at the UCI World Championships and is a multiple-time Canadian National TT Champion.
Career record and results
Paula’s first triathlon was in 2006 when at the age of 16 and she competed at the Lausanne ITU Triathlon World Championships in the same year – finishing in 13th position.
Findlay started to announce herself on the big stage in 2010 when she won her first event – the Monterrey ITU Triathlon World Cup. The Canadian then went on to come fifth in the 2010 ITU World Championship Series after accumulating 3016 points throughout the year, winning at London and Kitzbuehel and coming fifth at the Budapest Grand Final.
During the following year, Paula won in Sydney, Madrid and Kitzbuehel in the 2011 ITU World Championship Series, but was unable to improve on her fifth place in the overall rankings in 2010 as she finished sixth.
At her first Olympics in 2012, Findlay finished 52nd, but despite finishing last, it was an incredible effort from the Edmonton native as she battled a hip injury to somehow complete the race.
Findlay soon bounced back from her disappointment in England’s capital, finishing fifth at the 2013 Clermont ITU Sprint Triathlon Pan American Cup before winning the 2013 Sarasota ITU Triathlon Pan American Cup.
Top-ten finishes at the 2014 ITU Triathlon World Cups in Cozumel and Cartagena would follow, but Findlay had to wait until 2016 for her next win when she claimed the 2016 Tiszaujvaros ITU Triathlon World Cup.
A move up in distance came in 2017 and Paula finished second on her IRONMAN 70.3 debut in Austin. The Canadian then picked up her first IRONMAN 70.3 win at St. George in 2018 before recording top-five finishes in her next six races – including silver at 2018 IRONMAN 70.3 Santa Cruz and bronze at 2019 IRONMAN 70.3 Chattanooga.
At the end of 2019, Paula started a three-race winning streak as she recorded victories at IRONMAN 70.3 Indian Wells and Challenge Daytona in 2019 before landing the big one – the PTO 2020 Championship, also in Daytona.
Since then she has become one of the strongest contenders in middle distance triathlon, with multiple IRONMAN 70.3 podiums, PTO Open race wins and T100 podiums.
