ALL ABOUT THE ATHLETE

Inspirational Billy Monger, who set a world record at the IRONMAN World Championships in Kona in October, admits that it is only now that he has come to terms with what he achieved on the Big Island.

The 25-year-old former motor sport star, who had both his legs amputated following a near-fatal crash in 2017, became the fastest double leg amputee to complete the World Championship course in a time of 14:23:56 – over two hours quicker than the previous best.

And this week, the heroic Monger watched the Comic Relief documentary on his Kona feat with his friends and family. He admitted he is only just realising the magnitude of what he was able to achieve in Hawaii.

Now a popular TV presenter and personality – featuring on Channel 4’s coverage of F1 – Monger took to Instagram after watching the documentary for the first time.

“Last night I got to see my @comicrelief documentary for the first time with my family, friends and team by my side.

“This was the first time since my IRONMAN that I’ve sat and reflected on the magnitude of what I actually achieved and I couldn’t have done it without the support of the people in that room.

“I can’t wait for you guys to see it too during the week of Red Nose Day” 🙏🏼”

Billy’s documentary is set to air on Wednesday 19 March at 21:00 GMT on BBC One (Except on Scotland HD and Wales), with Comic Relief scheduled for Friday 21 March.
