He is not the first and he will not be the last – Aussie pro cycling star Cam Wurf has been disqualified from IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside 2025 for speeding.

That is not a misprint – the 41-year-old multi-sport star joins an illustrious list of stars previously brought to book for riding their bikes too fast during the annual triathlon showpiece in California. A list that includes former F1 world champion Jenson Button among others.

Wurf pays the penalty in Oceanside

The reason so many athletes fall foul of the rules in this particular race is one specific stretch of the bike course, one where specific speed limits are enforced for safety reasons.

Wurf had come out of the water around a minute off the pace set by Greg Harper, and was then setting about making inroads into the deficit as the bike leg moved into it’s final third. That is where that specific speed trap catches out so many athletes, and Cam became the latest victim.

Wurf was not the first athlete to suffer misery on Saturday afternoon in Oceanside – Norwegian great Kristian Blummenfelt had earlier lost more than 14 minutes thanks to a flat front tyre.

Another Aussie Jacob Birtwhistle meanwhile picked up a three-minute drafting penalty to ruin his victory bid.
