The City of Trees provided a picturesque backdrop for the return of the IRONMAN 70.3 Boise triathlon in Idaho as Sam Appleton (AUS) took the men’s win while Paula Findlay (CAN) topped the podium for the women’s race.

Here’s how it played out…

Men’s race – Three-way battle

The race kicked off in the pristine waters of Lucky Peak Reservoir, with a 1.2-mile swim starting and finishing in Barclay Bay.

Brennen Smith (CAN) was out of the water first, with a small group not far behind and that included Appleton, Justin Riele (USA) and Sam Osborne (AUS).

Remarkably it was just as tight on the bike – Appleton again marginally in front of Riele, with Jackson Laundry now the close-up third and more than five minutes back to the rest.

But it was on the run where Appleton settled things, his 1:13 half marathon more than three minutes quicker than Laundry and four better than Riele.

Women’s race – Findlay puts power down

In the women’s race it was the bike leg which proved decisive.

Findlay had been around 40 seconds back after the swim but then showed why she’s a multiple Canadian time trial champion as she surged to the front on the 56-mile bike course.

That put her in charge starting the run and she finished almost exactly five minutes ahead of Danielle Lewis (USA), with Jodie Stimpson (GBR) a further four minutes back in third.
