Britain’s Georgia Taylor-Brown and New Zealand’s Tayler Reid ran out the winners of the 31st edition of the Laguna Phuket Triathlon in Thailand – in contrasting styles.

GTB completely bossed to women’s race, crossing the line almost exactly eight minutes ahead of Nicole van der Kaay (NZL) in this hybrid distance (1.8km / 55km / 12km), non-drafting event.

But Reid was locked together with Aussie Josh Ferris for all but the closing stages of the run, winning by 14 seconds.

Billed as the ‘The Race of Legends’, it’s had a roll call of winners to match the lofty tagline including Jan Frodeno, Paula Newby-Fraser, Craig Alexander, Michellie Jones and last year Hayden Wilde.

Women’s race – Cruise control for GTB

For a so called “gap year” it’s been an incredibly busy few months for Taylor-Brown and she took in this race in between Dubai T100, IRONMAN 70.3 Bahrain and the T100 Grand Final in Qatar!

And it turned into something akin to a solo training session as the only time she had female company was in the swim from New Zealand’s Nicole van der Kaay.

GTB was on her own from the bike onwards and she came home nearly eight minutes ahead after an impressive run, with Justine Guerard (FRA) rounding out the podium in third.

Afterwards Taylor-Brown said on the live broadcast, which is embedded below: “I’ve wanted the rain to stop all week but today I wanted a bit of rain on the run as it started to get very humid and hot.

“But it was so much fun, I loved it. I love racing among the age groupers – them cheering me on and me cheering them on. It’s what I love about the sport.”

Next up for GTB is 70.3 Bahrain a week on Friday, with Qatar T100 seven days after that.

Men’s race – Epic duel

There was rarely anything between Reid and Ferris for the entire duration of the race.

They worked well together on the swim, then Reid led from the front on the first 10km of the ride in what was the most technical section.

They then took their turns on the front before setting down to a duel on the run and it was only late on that Reid was able to kick clear to win by 14 seconds. Rostyslav Pevtsov (UKR) was more than six minutes back in third.

“I’m very happy, that was super hard. Me and Josh worked well together all day and then battled it out on the run,” said Reid afterwards as he rounded out his season in style.

“I enjoyed it a lot – I ran a lot quicker than last year and I love being here in Phuket.”

There was an early sign that it was going to be Reid’s day when he took a tumble heading into T1 but barely broke his stride as he did a forward roll back onto his feet!
