Last weekend’s postponed IRONMAN 70.3 Versailles will now take place in October after extensive negotiations between race organisers and local authorities resulted in a new date being fixed for the event.
One of the M-dot brand’s new additions for 2026, the race – which was sold out within three hours – had to be postponed late last week after the Prefecture of Yvelines raised concerns regarding high temperatures.
Despite lengthy attempts by IRONMAN to reassure the authorities that hosting the event would be safe, it was eventually decided that a postponement was the safest form of action, with heatwave temperatures across central Europe expected to reach 35C.
Fourth race this season to be impacted
It was the fourth IRONMAN race this season to be impacted by the weather, with the Nice full-distance and 70.3 being cancelled – also at the request of local French authorities – and the race in Frankfurt seeing both the bike and run legs reduced in terms of distance.
However, while it was not possible for either of the Nice races to be rearranged for the 2026 calendar, officials have been able to secure a date for a return to Versailles in the autumn.

Speaking to the athletes on a video posted on the IRONMAN France Instagram page, Race Director Sylvain Risso explained why the race needed to be postponed and offered a series of options for athletes who had signed up for what they still hope will be a landmark event.
Understanding that the last few days had been difficult for the athletes who had trained hard and spent money on accommodation for the initial race date, he said: “We had anticipated every possible scenario with the heatwaves and worked closely with the Prefecture of Yvelines, the city of Versailles and the Château de Versailles to allow the race to take place.
Impact on health services and water shortage
“However, on Thursday, the Prefecture of Yvelines called us to announce that, in the current context with the high temperatures, it was not recommended to make a sporting event given the national health directives.
“Moreover, water shortage in the department of Yvelines did not play in our favour, given the number of aid stations that we had planned for you. In this context, we were asked to cancel the race on July 12.”

Athletes unable to compete at Nice this year have been offered the opportunity to find alternative events in the 2026 calendar, defer to the 2027 race – which has been switched to September – or seek a full refund.
The options were widely welcomed online, with IRONMAN praised for its response, and similar options are also being offered with regard to Versailles, although the fact that the race will now be held on Sunday, October 11, means athletes won’t have anywhere near as long to wait.
‘Tried everything possible to maintain the event’
In both cases, the prefectures – an administrative or political region governed by an appointed official – made the call to cancel the races due to concerns over the welfare of the athletes and the impact it could have on the region’s own health and emergency services.
“First of all, we tried everything possible to maintain the event,” added Risso. “We demonstrated that we had successfully organised races in similar conditions, especially from the point of view of heat. Despite this, it was not possible to maintain the race, and we accepted the decision of the prefecture.
“We then worked with the city of Versailles and the Château of Versailles to identify the dates that were possible to maintain the race over the 2026 season. Thanks to our work and the collaboration of the city and the château, I am happy to announce that the IRONMAN 70.3 Versailles will now take place on October 11, 2026.
“I know this date will not suit everyone; that is why, in addition to the postponement, other options will be offered to you, including a transfer to other races on the IRONMAN circuit or a refund.
“On behalf of the entire IRONMAN team, I want to tell you how disappointed we are for not having been able to welcome you on the initial date of July 12, and we are now mobilised so that the October event will be even more unforgettable. I look forward to seeing you on the start line.”
