Cancelled IRONMAN Nice will not be rescheduled as date for 2027 races switched to September

Talks to try and reschedule this year's cancelled IRONMAN Nice races have failed to find a suitable date, but next year's race will go ahead.

The cancelled IRONMAN Nice programme of races will not be rescheduled this year after officials were unable to agree on a suitable date with City of Nice representatives and local authorities – but athletes have been offered a package of options, including entry for next year’s event.

A date has now been fixed for both the full-distance and 70.3 races to return next year, with a conscious decision to avoid both the extreme summer heat and busy cultural calendar, resulting in the event being moved to September.

Nice was cancelled two weeks ago after the Alpes-Maritimes Prefecture ruled that continuing in the grip of such a fierce heatwave would put too much stress on its local health and emergency services.

Not possible to reschedule cancelled races

With temperatures across Europe breaking the 40C mark, the weather also saw IRONMAN Frankfurt – held over the same weekend – forced to reduce its bike and run legs to protect the thousands of athletes taking part.

IRONMAN France Project Director, Yves Cordier, posted a video on Instagram explaining that while talks had taken place to try and reschedule this year’s event, it was simply not possible to fit it into what was already a very busy few months for the city.

“Thanks for your patience and understanding during this week,” he said. “We know it has not been an easy time following this last-minute cancellation, and above all, because of all the energy you have put into it for your preparation.

“We worked for a solution this week to offer you as many options as possible. Over the last week, we have been engaged in close conversation with the City of Nice and the local authorities and services, firstly, to find a date later in 2026 in the second semester.

New date agreed as event switches to September

“Unfortunately, with a busy schedule over the next three months, we were unable to find any suitable solutions. We regret that we are unable to offer you a solution for this 2026 year.”

This year’s IRONMAN 70.3 World Championships will be held in Nice on the weekend of September 12/13, but with the worlds moving to Chattanooga in Tennessee for 2027, it is that date which has now been selected to host both of next year’s full-distance and 70.3 races.

While Cordier explains it is a decision made ‘exceptionally’ for 2027, the fact that they are looking to avoid further heatwave issues next year points to a more permanent switch in the future. Further discussions are likely after next year’s event.

All age-group athletes who were scheduled to race two weeks ago have now been emailed with an explanation of the options available to them in the wake of the cancellation.

Transfer… defer… or get a refund

Those options include transferring to another 2026 IRONMAN event, with additional capacity being created at a designated list of eligible races; deferring to next year’s race on September 12; or requesting a full refund of their race registration fee. The series of options has been welcomed by athletes commenting on the Instagram post.

A deadline for athletes to make their decision has been set for Monday, July 20, 2026.

“We are making as many options as possible available,” he added. “We have sent an email to all registered athletes, and I hope you will be happy with these options and that you’ll find the one that’s best and most suitable for you.

“Furthermore, for 2027 we have decided to choose a more suitable date with the weather conditions, the heatwave conditions, and also all the events taking place in the first half of 2027, notably the elections and big events like the Cannes Film Festival.

‘We are really proud to offer this solution’

“We decided, exceptionally in 2027, to shift the date to September, so it will be Sunday, September 12, 2027. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you, all services, and the City of Nice for having worked on this date.

“We are really proud to offer you this solution, which I hope will suit you, and we are looking forward to seeing you again next year in September. The whole IRONMAN France team joins me in thanking you, and we obviously hope to find you here in Nice in a few months.”
