Britain’s Lucy Charles-Barclay warmed up for the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona next month in perfect style with a clear-cut victory at Spain T100.
Charles-Barclay won a first IMWC crown when it was last held in Hawaii in 2023 and this was another indication that her preparation has gone pretty much perfectly.
She was at the front of the race in the swim and bike and then ran the first half of the run alongside compatriot Kate Waugh before easing clear on the fourth of six laps.
It was an action replay of the result at T100 London when LCB collared Waugh late on and this latest success means she’s the first woman to win two T100 races this season.
Two minutes separated them on the line, with Jess Learmonth – who was hit with a drafting penalty on the bike – keeping on well in third to make it an all-British podium.
Swim – Front four gap the rest
The non-wetsuit swim was held in pretty much ideal conditions and it was no surprise to see Charles-Barclay and Learmonth lead the way.
Another uber-swimmer in Sara Perez Sala (ESP) was able to go with them – as was Waugh.
And after the first of two 1km laps there were already 26 seconds back to the best.
That pattern continued on the second lap, Waugh having now overtaken Perez Sala to make it a British 1-2-3 – as it would be on the podium a few hours later.
When the four leaders emerged from the water for a second time they were over a minute ahead of the chasers, who were led by Caroline Pohle (GER).
Ashleigh Gentle (AUS), the winner last time out at French Riviera T100, was 1:48 down in 10th.
Bike – Learmonth ‘fuming’ at penalty
Onto the bike and Perez Sala was quickest through transition and briefly led into the first of six bike laps.
But on the second lap we were back to the British trio up front, Perez Sala 13 seconds back in fourth and Pohle at +1:23 in fifth.
The next group was India Lee (GBR), Hanne De Vet (BEL) and Hannah Berry (NZL) who were now nearly two minutes back – and Gentle was losing ground rather than gaining.
There was nothing between the leading trio until Learmonth was hit with a 60-second drafting penalty and you could hear her frustration, calling it “a joke” and wanting to see the evidence afterwards.
To her credit she kept the gap to almost exactly that minute in the second half of the bike despite riding solo.
And that was the situation going into T2 – LCB and Waugh locked together, Learmonth a minute back in third and then Berry, De Vet, Lee and Pohle all together in fourth to seventh, around 3:20 back. Gentle meanwhile had more than six minutes to make up.
Run – LCB too strong for Waugh
Charles-Barclay and Waugh looked in almost-perfect sync through transition and then they matched each other early on the run – Lucy dropping her nutrition bag and going back for it while Kate did the same for a gel.
But they were soon back running together and we were treated to a repeat of their T100 London battle.
Charles-Barclay proved much the stronger, easing clear on the fourth of six laps and she never looked back from that point.
A handful of seconds were soon up to 20 and Waugh couldn’t respond, eventually taking a fine second place, two minutes adrift.
The British 1-2-3 was rounded off by Learmonth. who was comfortably clear of the rest – and greeted by her young son on the finish line.
And with the quickest run split, Gentle moved up to fourth in the closing stages.
