Taylor Knibb has revealed how a message from her Olympic teammate Kevin McDowell helped her embrace the pressure of chasing a childhood dream at the IRONMAN World Championship.
Reflecting on her Kona victory two weeks later, the American described the achievement as “special and surreal” – and shared the words she carried with her through stressful moments before and during the race.
Knibb also paid a heartfelt tribute to Solveig Løvseth, whose response underlined the mutual respect between the two champions following their contrasting fortunes in Hawaii.
“Living little Taylor’s DREAM”
Writing on Instagram, Knibb admitted she had needed some time before putting her feelings into words.
“I can’t believe it’s already been two weeks… (and that I’ve avoided/evaded posting that long… I guess it’s time!)
“2026 Ironman World Champion.”

She then revealed the message McDowell sent while she was travelling to Hawaii.
The pair helped the USA win silver in the inaugural Olympic mixed relay at Tokyo in 2021, alongside Katie Zaferes and Morgan Pearson. Five years later, McDowell offered a timely reminder of what her latest challenge meant.
“Just be in the moment and don’t overthink (I know easier said than done). But it’s so cool what you’re doing and living that little Taylor’s DREAM. Most can’t say that.”
For Knibb, those words became something to return to when the demands of race week – and the race itself – threatened to take over.
“It was a great reminder the whole trip, especially during stressful moments leading up to and during the race,” she explained.
“Special and surreal”
Knibb’s victory delivered the title she had dreamed of, but processing that achievement has proved harder to put into words.
“To be able to make a childhood dream a legitimate goal is a privilege,” she wrote.
“But then to achieve that dream and goal? It’s special and surreal and really hard for me to find the words to fully and properly express it.
“THANK YOU so much to everyone who believed in me and supported me and made it possible.”
Her reflections offered a personal glimpse behind the world championship performance: an athlete recognising the distance travelled from childhood ambition to winning on triathlon’s most famous stage.
Knibb’s tribute to Løvseth
Knibb also reserved a special message for defending champion Løvseth, who suffered a dramatic collapse within the final mile but managed to reach the finish.
Their fortunes were a reversal of the previous year, when Løvseth claimed the crown and Knibb’s own challenge ended in a late collapse.
“So much respect for your racing and resilience and for making it to the finish line,” Knibb wrote.
“I’ve enjoyed racing you so much this year — you make the races so honest, elevate the sport, and also bring so much positive energy around the race.
“I’m looking forward to hopefully racing each other for many years (even decades?) to come.”
Løvseth responded with an equally warm message to the newly crowned champion.
“You are amazing Taylor! So so so happy for you!” she wrote.
“It is always so inspiring to watch you race and I love being out on the course with you. See you next year.”
