Dame Flora Duffy, Bermuda’s first-ever Olympic champion, has brought her incredible career to a close.

She represented her island, which has a population of just 65,000 people, with distinction at no fewer than five Olympic Games – Beijing in 2008 and then London, Rio, Tokyo and Paris.

She followed her Tokyo triumph in 2021 – Bermuda’s first gold – by claiming that year’s world title, to become the first woman to win both in the same season.

And she was still a factor in Paris in 2024, brilliantly handling the strong currents in the River Seine to lead out the swim before breaking away on the bike and eventually finishing fifth – a performance that was indicative of her positive style of racing.

She also won Commonwealth Games gold medals in 2018 and 2022, four world titles in total, six XTERRA World Championships and received the Order of the British Empire for her services to triathlon in Bermuda and the world in 2018 before being awarded a Damehood in 2022.

‘A heart full of gratitude’

Writing on Instagram, the 38-year-old said: “As I close this chapter of my life, I do so with a heart full of gratitude. Growing up in Bermuda with its pink sand beaches and turquoise waters, I fell in love with the sport of triathlon 30 years ago.

“From my first Olympic appearance in Beijing in 2008, through London and Rio, to winning gold in Tokyo, and my final Olympic appearance in Paris. Every stroke, pedal, and stride has been the privilege of a lifetime. Winning four World Triathlon titles, six XTERRA World Championships, and two Commonwealth Games gold medals are achievements I could never have imagined as a young island girl. Dreams came true and more.

“None of it would have been possible without the coaches who believed in me when I doubted myself, the friends who kept me grounded through the highs and the lows (the many injuries!) and the training partners who always kept it fun. To family – thank you for always supporting me even if my dreams did seem a little crazy at times.”

Injury challenges

And speaking to World Triathlon she revealed that a frustrating few years dealing with injuries had been pivotal in making the decision to retire: “It just got to a point with my body where I just kept breaking down and getting injured when I tried to train at the level needed to race the highest level. My body was just giving me clear signs and the timing felt right.”

Reflecting on her groundbreaking career, she added: “I just hope that I’ve inspired athletes to race with courage, with tenacity and to really go for it, not rely on others to create the race or create the opportunity in the race but to really take the race on themselves and create their own opportunities and leave it all out there.

“It definitely involves being a bit courageous and brave and it doesn’t work out all the time but when it does, it feels really great.”

‘Icon and inspiration’

And one of the first to pay tribute was British star Georgia Taylor-Brown who was runner-up to Duffy at both the Tokyo Olympics and the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022.

She wrote on Instagram: “A beautiful farewell for a beautiful career 💕🥹 I feel extremely grateful that I got to race against you at your absolute best ✨ you pushed me all the way but made sure we were always having fun!

“We share so many amazing memories together and for that, I thank you 🫶🏼 sending all my love & all the luck for your next chapter xxx”

And World Triathlon President Antonio F. Arimany said: “Flora Duffy is an icon and an inspiration. From her first races to the very pinnacle of triathlon achievement, Flora has been a phenomenal ambassador for the sport and for her country.

“Her presence will be missed, but her legacy will live on and list of achievements may never be topped, such is the impact Flora has had since she joined the first ever Team ITU development squad back in 2006.

“On behalf of World Triathlon I would like to thank her for the remarkable contribution she has made to our sport and wish her every success for the next chapter.”
