“Our goal is to provide a real alternative to the current long distance triathlon offerings”

Co-founded by 2012 Olympic Champion, Nicola Spirig, Spirit Multisport (www.spiritmultisport.com) has announced a new European Long Distance Triathlon Series. The four events combine four established events across four countries (with four different distances).

  • Triathlon Portocolom, Mallorca – 1km / 100km / 10km
  • Chiemsee Triathlon, Germany – Middle Distance
  • Triathlon Alpe d’Huez, France – 2.2km / 118km / 20km
  • Vorarlberg Triathlon, Austria – 1.2km / 93km / 12km

Building the series around established events is, in my opinion, a smart move in what is already a crowded and competitive market. It will be interesting to see what the ‘aggregation’ of these four independent events means in practice in terms of a series, with the press release (published below), indicating “contracted professional athletes, increased prize money pools, international coaching seminars.”

Spirit Multisport Launches European Long Distance Triathlon Series

Spirit Multisport has today announced plans for the formation of a European Long Distance Triathlon Series, consisting of iconic triathlon events across four countries.

The unique series, featuring contracted professional athletes, increased prize money pools, international coaching seminars, as well as the opportunity for age group athletes to earn points across the series, will see athletes racing in spectacular and challenging locations.

Billed as the ‘World’s Toughest Long Distance Tri Series’, the series calendar will consist of four of Europe’s most historic and prestigious triathlon events:

  • 14 April, 2019 – International Triathlon Portocolom, Mallorca, Spain
  • 30 June, 2019 – EBERL Chiemsee Triathlon, Germany
  • 25 July, 2019 – TIME Triathlon Alpe d’Huez, France
  • 25 August, 2019 – TRANS Vorarlberg Triathlon, Austrian National Championships

Spirit Multisport CEO, Tom Sutton, said: “Our goal is to provide a real alternative to the current long distance triathlon offerings – delivering higher quality, unique race formats and distances that triathletes can plan their seasons around.

“We’re extremely proud to partner with iconic events that have long established reputations for safety, fairness and professionalism, as well as a shared vision for the future of the sport.”

Spirit Co-Founder and triathlon Olympic Gold and Silver medallist, Nicola Spirig, said: “As someone who has trained with long distance athletes throughout my career, I have always appreciated the amount of hard work and sacrifice required from those age group and professionals to race at their best.”

“We are very excited to work with events that will be professional, but also represent the core values of triathlon, such as inclusiveness, improved lifestyle through sport and fun.”

The series will hold an official press conference at the International Portocolom Triathlon event in April, and will be releasing details on major sponsorship and partnership initiatives over the coming months.
