Wasdale, on the west coast of Cumbria, is home to the highest mountain in England, Scafell Pike, the deepest lake, Wastwater, and the smallest church, St Olaf’s, and now Wasdale is set to be the home of the ultimate half ironman-distance challenge.

ACS-Events, the organisers of Tri Windermere have announced that the Wasdale Triathlon will be launched on April Fools Day.

The 1.2 mile swim in Wastwater, a 56-mile seriously steep bike ride and 13.1 mile run over England’s highest mountain, Scafell Pike is by far the toughest triathlon in the country and only the intrepid need apply. ACS-Events organiser, Davy Newell, says; "We have dreamt about this event for years, and had to keep it under wraps. It’s taken a long time to get everything absolutely perfect – it’s the perfect storm!"

"This event really is only for the seriously committed, and the application process will reflect this. Our rescue team will be tighter and sharper than ever, and we’re really expecting that people should prepare themselves to be at their absolute peak of fitness and trained totally appropriately to take part."

Competitors will have to undertake a qualifier in order that they are deemed fit for the event.

"People have been asking us what kind of event to compare it to, and the short answer is, there is no comparison. Wasdale is staggeringly beautiful, and you’ll be swimming in incredibly deep iconic water. The cycle route will see you achieving things that you never thought possible in tri, and to run up England’s highest mountain after swimming the deepest lake has got to be a triathlete’s career pinnacle."

Wasdale Triathlon will take place on 30th September 2012 and entries will be open on 1st April 2012.
