Two triathletes, one British, confirmed dead at World Championship in Spain

World Triathlon has confirmed the death of two competitors during Thursday’s Age Group action in the World Championship in Spain.

The Grand Final showpiece got under way in tragic circumstances with one British athlete and one Mexican passing away in Torremolinos. The pair were taking part in Age Group racing over the sprint distance.

World Triathlon announce tragic news

World Triathlon announced the news in a statement on its social channels, informing followers: “It is with deep sadness that we can inform that two participants (one from Mexico; one from Great Britain) have died at the World Triathlon Torremolinos-Andalucía AG Sprint Distance World Championships, taking place today, October 17.

“Our deepest condolences go to their respective family, friends, National Federations and all the triathlon family. World Triathlon, the Spanish Federation and the LOC are in contact with their families and NFs to provide all the support needed in these difficult and sad times.”

Our thoughts and prayers are very much with with the loved ones of both athletes.
