Taking down a strong field, Iestyn Harrett ran his way to victory yesterday at Challenge Mogan-Gran Canaria, where the Welshman took his first professional middle distance win.

A Commonwealth Games medalist from Birmingham 2022, Harrett beat former world champion Kristian Hogenhaug thanks to a lightning quick run leg in Spain.

Looking back on his victory, the 30-year-old revealed his tactics on race day and why once he got off the bike in good shape, he knew he was in with a chance of victory.

“It’s a really challenging and demanding bike course”

In the front group out of the water, Harrett said he had to work hard to stay in contention on the bike, as Hogenhaug set about breaking up the lead pack over the 90km course, which featured over 1,400m of climbing.

“I think the big challenge for me today was sticking in there on the bike, because it is a really challenging and demanding bike course with all the hills.

“I knew if I could come off the bike in good shape then I would have a good chance of the win, as I am always confident on the run and I am really pleased with that.”

Pacing and patience

On to the run, Harrett said pacing was key to his victory, as he slowly reeled in Hogenhaug before making a decisive move with a lap and a half to go.

“I didn’t want to push too hard and close the gap too quick, as the half marathon is still a long way and you’ve only got so much energy.

“I just chipped off bit-by-bit and then when I did make the move, I pushed hard and then settled back down to tempo to the finish.”
