More than just a final opportunity to secure their qualification for Kona, this weekend’s IRONMAN Kalmar offers athletes the opportunity to chase crucial Pro Series points on a course widely regarded as one of the most stunning on the triathlon calendar.
While there are six places for the Big Island up for grabs – three per gender – that will not be the only focus of interest on Saturday as the likes of Laura Philipp (GER), Katrine Græsbøll Christensen (DEN), Matthew Marquardt (USA), Trevor Foley (USA) and Jonas Schomburg (GER) look to hone their skills ahead of championship season.
It promises to be an intriguing contest on the shores of the Baltic Sea… Here is all you need to know.
Start time and how to watch live
IRONMAN Kalmar starts on Saturday, August 15, when the pro men dive into Kalmar Strait at Tullhamnen at 06:45 local Central European time, followed five minutes later by the pro women.
Viewers around the world will be able to watch the race live and for free on the IRONMAN YouTube channel, with coverage starting at 06:15 local time. For viewers in the UK, this will mean a 05:15 start.

On the East Coast of North America, the programme starts at 00:15, which will be 23:30 on Friday in Central America and 21:30 on Friday on the Pacific Coast.
Viewers in Eastern Australia can watch from 14:30, Central Australia from 14:00, and Western Australia from 12:30. Streaming starts at 16:30 for viewers in New Zealand.
The Kalmar course
The one-loop 3.8km swim takes athletes out into the Kalmar Strait and into the waters of the Baltic Sea. Huge crowds are expected to cheer them as they dive into the waters, which are expected to be around 20C.
Turning back toward the city, they head for T1 at Lustgården before heading out on the 180km bike course which heads out to the island of Öland – known for its outstanding natural beauty – and then back to the mainland.
A three-loop 42.2km run course has gained quite a reputation on the Pro Series circuit as the whole city seems to turn up to celebrate and cheer on the triathletes. Running along the beach and through the city centre, they will pass the city wall at Västerport before finishing next to the cathedral.
Pro women – Philipp returns after injury troubles
While defending champion Katrine Græsbøll Christensen will wear the No.1 bib this weekend, it could be argued that German superstar Laura Philipp deserves top billing as she returns from illness and injury, looking to build her fitness ahead of another bid for Kona glory.
Philipp has endured a difficult season, racing only twice and being forced to pull out of Challenge Roth just last month, but confirmed this week that she is back to full health and looking to enjoy a first-ever visit to Sweden.
Writing on Instagram, she said: “I’m excited to race IRONMAN Kalmar on August 15th! 🇸🇪
“After getting back to full health and finishing another great altitude camp in St Moritz over the last weeks, we made the rather spontaneous decision to line up for this iconic race.
“I’ve never been to Sweden before, so I’m looking forward to exploring a new country, experiencing a new race course, and putting my body, mind and equipment to the test ahead of the World Championship races.”
A test is certainly what she will get this weekend, joining a women’s line-up packed with experienced athletes, including many who will be hungry to make one final bid for Kona qualification.
Dane Christensen is certainly one to watch, having already secured a win at Challenge Sir Bani-Yas and booking her Big Island spot thanks to a second-place finish at IRONMAN South Africa in April.
Indeed, she has achieved podium places in five of her six races this year, with a standout third place behind Philipp and Solveig Løvseth coming at IRONMAN Hamburg and proving she has what it takes to challenge the very best.
The women’s field also includes proven performers Jackie Hering and Rachel Zilinskas of the United States. Hering has compiled an impressive run of results throughout 2026, while Zilinskas arrives fresh from a podium finish at IRONMAN Lake Placid. A
As one of the strongest swimmers in the field, Zilinskas could play a major role in shaping the race from the opening stages.
The women who need a Kona slot
While many of the women’s favourites have already secured their places on the start line in Kona, several athletes still have everything to race for.
Leonie Konczalla (GER), Jeanne Collonge (FRA), and Jenny Jendryschik (GER) all arrive knowing a breakthrough performance could secure one of the final available world championship slots.
Pro men – Marquardt, Foley and Schomburg to do battle
The men’s race features a field of over 70 athletes, led by Americans Trevor Foley and Matthew Marquardt. The pair arrive after competing at IRONMAN Lake Placid and will continue their pursuit of valuable Pro Series points in Sweden.
Over recent seasons, Foley and Marquardt have found themselves sharing the race course on numerous occasions, producing several memorable battles along the way. Kalmar could provide another chapter in that growing rivalry.
Germany’s Jonas Schomburg will be one of the most fascinating athletes to watch throughout the day. Known for his aggressive racing style, Schomburg rarely waits for the race to come to him and will likely look to establish an advantage early during the swim and bike.
If the race remains close heading onto the marathon, Matt Hanson could become one of the most dangerous men in the field. The American has built his reputation on exceptional run performances and will be hoping to work his way through the field during the final 42.2 km.
Antonio Benito Lopez presents a similar threat. The Spaniard’s run strength makes him a serious contender if he can stay within striking distance entering T2, potentially setting up a dramatic battle through the streets of Kalmar.
The men who need a Kona slot
Germany’s Jonas Hoffmann, along with Finland’s Henrik Goesch, are among the highest-ranked men still seeking qualification. A standout performance in Sweden could transform their seasons.
Swedish fans will also keep a close eye on local favourite Jesper Svensson as he looks to deliver a memorable performance on home soil.
Points and prizes on offer
There are 5,000 Pro Series points up for grabs to the winners of this weekend’s IRONMAN Kalmar, making it more than simply a last-gasp chance for Kona qualification.
The $125,000 USD total prize purse is divided equally between the male and female professional fields, providing $62,500 USD per gender.
This money is then distributed down to the top ten finishers in each gender on a sliding scale.
