The Edersee Triathlon was where it all began for Patrick Lange.
And since then the German superstar has put together one of the most storied swim, bike and run careers ever, featuring no fewer than three IRONMAN World Championship wins in Kona as well as a whole host of other big-race successes including the iconic Challenge Roth.
So it was fitting that he chose Edersee to announce that he will call time as a professional in a year’s time.
‘A celebration of the journey’
Posting some words to accompany the short film, he explained: “For this video I came back to Edersee to tell the story of where my journey started, what this sport has given me, and how I want to finish this incredible chapter of my life.
“It won’t end today. It won’t end tomorrow.
“There is still one more year to race.
“One more season to give everything I have.
“One more Kona.
“One more Roth.
“This career has taken me to the highest of highs and the lowest of lows. Every victory, every setback, every lesson has shaped who I am.
“And when the finish line finally comes, I don’t want it to be a goodbye filled with sadness. I want it to be a celebration of everything this journey has been.
“So let’s enjoy this last lap together.
“The circle is closing but not just quite yet.
“See you on the road to Kona. And one final time in Roth. ❤️”
Fitting finale
As you’d expect for one of the most respected and popular figures in the sport, there were hundreds of lovely comments and tributes.
IRONMAN, who will welcome Lange back to Kona in October, said: “What a journey it has been, we can’t wait to celebrate you and everything you’ve given to this sport ❤️”

And Challenge Roth said: “Thanks for giving us the absolute honour of being your last dance ❤️”
Roth’s race direcctor Felix Walchshöfer added: “My dear Patrick, Roth is going to throw you one hell of a party! Thanks for what you have done for the sport, thank you for what you have done for Roth, thanks for being you over all the years, thanks for being a honest friend❤️”
