Multisport Championships are returning to Ibiza

With the ITU Grand Final coming up in Lausanne, Switzerland this week, we typically also get various news updates of forthcoming events from the Executive Board, the first of which is here.

Having hosted the first European Championship edition of the format in 2018, Ibiza will once again be on the schedule as host of the 2022 World Triathlon Multisport Championships.

Here is the full announcement from the ITU.

ITU awards Ibiza the Multisport World Championships in 2022

ITU is pleased to announce that its Executive Board has decided to award to the island of Ibiza, in Spain, the World Triathlon Multisport Championships in 2022. The Mediterranean island, that already hosted the European version of the event in 2018, is ready to welcome triathletes from all over the world for 10 days of sport at it its best.

“The Multisport World Championships has been incredibly successful in the last few years since we launched this product, and we have seen not only a great interest from cities to bid to host this event, but also from athletes willing to compete”, said ITU President and IOC Member Marisol Casado. “And we are extremely proud of Ibiza willing to host this event, as a clear proof of the legacy of our events, returning to the island only a few years after hosting the European event”, she explained.

The World Championships will see duathlon, long distance triathlon, aquathlon and cross triathlon championship races organized together during a week-long festival. This ground-breaking event now allows for athletes to compete in various multisport races, as opposed to electing only one each season. And participants can even vie for the Multisport Legend, a title reserved for those who compete in all four events.

Ibiza was elected after presenting the Bid to the members of the Executive Board, who had the opportunity to compare the proposal from the Spanish island and from the city of Pesaro, in Italy, who was encouraged to continue bidding in future editions.

The World Triathlon Multisport Championships made its debut in the ITU calendar in 2017 in Penticton (Canada), a successful event that was followed by Fyn (Denmark) in 2018 and Pontevedra (Spain) in 2019. Next year the event will travel to the city of Almere (The Netherlands), to be followed by Townsville (Australia) in 2021.
