New events 2012 - supported by Royles

The Tri247 team has been scouring the 2012 event calendars for interesting NEW events joining the ever increasing annual multisport schedule. Here is what caught our eyes for new events in the South West Region in 2012, featuring a new festival of sporting events arriving for a busy weekend in September...

Click on the links below to read our selections for all of the other regions too, and perhaps find something new to enter in 2012.

FESTIVAL OF SPORT CORNWALL 2012 - 14th-16th September

The Festival of Sport Cornwall is the latest addition to the portfolio of Participate Sport (, a relatively new mass participation sports events company who launched in 2011 with their Cycletta women only cycle rides, which themselves will be expanding in 2012 - including an event within the Festival on Saturday 15th September.

Organisers are describing this as "the Glastonbury of mass participation sport" with triathlon featuring heavily (Sprint, Olympic, Middle), alongside open water swim races, a Cycletta, Sportive, Beach Runs (5km/10km) and and Off Road Enduro.

All of these will run alongside live music and entertainment on Friday and Saturday evening, elite athlete seminars, fun beach sports (beach volleyball, touch rugby, gig rowing and more), comedians and bands.

The events are all based around St Michael's Mount ( in Mount's Bay in St Aubyn Estates ( Fine views will not be lacking at this venue!

Tri247 were at the launch of the Festival of Sport last year - check out this video footage from the weekend:

All of the triathlon events take place on the morning of Sunday 16th September, with entry including a Festival Pass and free beach sports.

The swim sections for all distances start on the beach of Mount's Bay, heading out towards St. Michael's Mount before returning to the beach, and the transition area which will be based within the Festival hub. The cycle leg heads out into the Cornish countryside both inland and on coastal roads, the Middle Distance event being a two-lap event. The final run leg goes through the town of Marazion with fantastic views of St. Michael's Mount as you had back towards the finish.
