For Alex Yee the 2023 WTCS season was not supposed to end like this as he missed out on world title glory following a disappointing day at the Grand Finals in Pontevedra.

It was not the first world title near miss for the 2021 Tokyo Olympic silver medallist, but he is not dwelling on his 30th-place finish in Spain after leading the WTCS standings heading into that season-ending showdown.

Fantastic 2023 season for Yee

Yee had been in fantastic form throughout the year, with the highlight being a sensational performance to win the Paris Test Event and claim Olympic qualification last month.

Alex also grabbed impressive victories in Abu Dhabi and Cagliari, as well as finishing on the podium in Hamburg. Top spot in the final standings though eluded him again as Dorian Coninx of France claimed the title on a day of drama in Pontevedra.

Yee was well off the pace after the swim and was unable to get back into contention at the front of the race, and on Sunday evening he provided some reaction to the day as he wrote on Instagram.

The message was short, but full of love for the sport and the determination to succeed once again.

He wrote: “Cruel game but we love it. Congrats to everyone this weekend and a special thanks to @max_stapley
I’ll keep showing up x”

The message to Yee’s 92,500 followers brought heartwarming messages of support from fellow short-course athletes, and next up he will be locking horns with some of them in Super League Triathlon’s trip to Malibu this coming Saturday.
