The countdown to BBC SPOTY (Sports Personality Of The Year) is well and truly on as triathlon holds its collective breath for Alex Yee.
Britain’s Olympic champion stopped a nation back on July 31 when he produced that epic final surge to beat great rival Hayden Wilde in the battle for gold at Paris 2024. It was a spectacular effort which has since been crowned as Team GB’s Moment of the Games by the British public.
Alex has also been voted SJA Sportsman of the Year – another much-revered award – but now the whole of the swim/bike/run world is hoping that he can capture the biggest one of all – SPOTY.
And now we know when we will found out whether Alex will be one of the six shortlisted athletes going head-to-head for the prize later this month.
When will SPOTY shortlist be announced?
That announcement for the shortlist will come tomorrow (Monday December 9) at 0700 UK time. That is 0800 CET, 0200 Eastern in the United States or 2300 PST Sunday on the West Coast.
Other stars expected to be battling for a place on that shortlist include Britain’s 800m Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson, cycling star Mark Cavendish and teenage darts sensation Luke Littler. Hodgkinson is currently the odds-on favourite to win the prize.
When will SPOTY be awarded?
The six athletes shortlisted will go forward to the final winner announcement, which will take place live on national TV on Tuesday September 17 in Manchester. Fans around the world will be able to watch live on the BBC. The winner will be decided by a public vote.
The awards show will air between 1900 and 2100 UK time.
