Jonas Schomburg’s bold approach at Oceanside pays off as he takes race to ‘Big Blu’

Jonas Schomburg produced one of the standout performances of the day at IRONMAN 70.3 Oceanside, only to be denied late on by a charging Kristian Blummenfelt.

The German set the tone early with an aggressive race strategy, pushing the pace from the outset in a bid to break the field.

He swapped the lead in the swim with Marc Dubrick and then joined forces with Sam Long on the bike and the run – and for a while it looked like they might stay away.

But Blummenfelt’s second sensational half marathon in the space of a week won the day – though Schomburg lost little in defeat.

“I wanted to make the race as fast as possible”

Racing Oceanside for the first time, Schomburg made his intentions clear from the off.

He explained afterwards: “It was a great day actually. First time here and I wanted to make the race as fast as possible.”

That meant committing fully on the bike: “A quick transition and then I worked on the bike pretty hard the first half an hour to open the gap.”

He was later joined by Long, with the pair building a significant advantage over the chasers heading into T2.

But the effort began to tell on the run: “On the run I didn’t have the speed and Kristian was closing and closing. I knew he was coming.”

Blummenfelt’s late surge ultimately proved decisive, leaving Schomburg to settle for second after a 1:09 half and it was a result he was rightly keen to take positives from.

“I have to be happy with the second place,” he said – and there’s little time to dwell, with a packed schedule coming up for the German.

“I’m on a big US trip,” he added on the live broadcast. “I’m going to Boulder now, then [IRONMAN] Texas and then the T100 Singapore one week after.”

Solid return for Stornes

Behind him, reigning IRONMAN World Champion Casper Stornes completed the podium in third thanks to another beautifully-paced run which saw him overtake Long late on – an encouraging result given his disrupted preparation.

“I felt quite good today… I’ve been dealing with an [Achilles] injury before this competition. I’ve only had four weeks with proper running,” said the Norwegian.

Stornes now looks ahead to a packed campaign, with several major targets already lined up, including three huge IRONMAN races.

“I’m heading to Texas, then Frankfurt and then Kona.”

After a testing lead-in, this podium in California offers a strong platform to build on for the months ahead.
