Spaniard Antonio Benito Lopez took a memorable win in the Basque Country this weekend, as the 29-year-old took the tape in front of a home crowd at IRONMAN Vitoria-Gasteiz.

The race was full of drama, with the reigning IRONMAN World Champion, Sam Laidlow, disqualified towards the end of the bike leg after failing to serve a drafting penalty. The Frenchman continued to race under protest, but upon finishing his disqualification was upheld.

However IRONMAN later confirmed that the Frenchman had done enough to validate his slot for the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona in October.

On the run, as a number of battles unfolded, David McNamee ran through to finish in second, with Team Ineos Grenadier Cameron Wurf holding off Bradley Weiss to round out the podium in third.
