Javier Gomez and Mario Mola have been appointed to major roles with the Spanish Triathlon Federation and will now be responsible for developing the stars of the future.

The pair were officially appointed to roles this week as Spain puts together a structure aimed at competing for Olympic and WTCS glory in the coming years.

For Gomez the news comes just days after he announced his retirement from elite competition, following a glittering career which brought him five ITU world titles, Olympic silver behind Alistair Brownlee at London 2012 and an IRONMAN 70.3 world title.

Spanish greats in key roles

The 41-year-old, one of the most loved athletes on the circuit as well as having that incredible palmares, will now become coach to the Spanish team as they look to plan towards the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

The 34-year-old Mola – ITU world champion in 2016, 2017 and 2018, will become a technical advisor as he looks to ensure a structure which nurtures the stars of tomorrow.

Gomez and Mola react to appointments

A delighted Gomez said: “This sport has given me everything for over 20 years dedicated body and soul to high competition. It is time to continue working with the same enthusiasm and intensity, to support and help present and future generations to develop their full potential and continue to give us joy.

“Thanks to @triatlonsp for trusting me, it will be an honour to work hand in hand with other great professionals to add to the great work that many are already doing in this country. #teamespaña.”

Mola was also excited and delighted with his appointment, explaining: “So happy to continue contributing to the growth and future of the triathlon!. I am grateful to @triatlonsp for the trust and the opportunity to contribute to the health and development of this sport, with the excitement of continuing to celebrate the successes of ours. Let’s go for more! #TeamEspaña.”
