![]() Dibens wins XTERRA World Champs again Posted on: Sunday 26th October 2008 Bookmark This | Print This Page | Send To A Friend Julie Dibens retained her XTERRA World Triathlon Championship in Maui on Sunday. Putting to good use her new rocket bike, she exited the swim as second lady behind Linda Gallo, before quickly hitting the front on the tough off-road bike section to forge a big lead on the tough, lava-rock course. The 10km is no easy run, with part beach, part rocks, off-road, hills... but none of that was enough to stop a dominant Dibens retain her title, despite second placed athlete Danelle Kabush closing several minutes on the run section to finish less than a minute back. The men's race was won by Spanish athlete Ruben Ruzafa, a surprise to many, as he certainly wasn't highlighted as a pre-race favourite. A quick bit of research on our part indicates that both Ruzafa and Weiss are pro mountain bikers, and they clearly put that to good use, both riding over three minutes faster than the third best rider (Josiah Middaugh). Weiss certainly does have an XTERRA pedigree, having won in Austria this year. Second place finisher from the Ford Ironman World Champs, Eneko Llanos took the "The Double" for the best combined Ironman and XTERRA finish times.
Jim McConnell finished 23rd, Lesley Patterson 10th, while Sam Gardner appears to have been a DNF during the bike leg. Looking through the age groups we believe that there were a few GB medalists. If we've missed anyone, do let us know. GOLD: Peter Hawkins (M25-29), Emma Smith (F25-29) Full results can be found HERE. ![]()
