Have you heard the one about... Posted on: Monday 13th July 2009 Bookmark This | Print This Page | Send To A Friend | Post A Comment ... the English girl(s), Welsh men, Scots man and Irish man? Don't worry, we're not about to launch badjokes247.com! With all the talk of Ironman (distance) world records over the past few days, it's also worth highlighting that there have been - we believe - a whole host of home nations records set over the past couple of weeks. We're not sure if everything here is 100%, but we figure we may be in a better position than anyone to have a stab at things. Of course, we hope we can rely on our readers to correct any oversights...and as you know, we do like a statistic or two. EnglandIt goes without saying the Chrissie Wellington's performance in Roth, 8:31:59 is a new female English iron-distance record, improving on her 8:51:24 from Frankfurt last year. Things move so quickly, that the Frankfurt time is no longer even in the all-time top-10... No English records for the men - we believe that's still held by Stephen Bayliss, Ironman Austria 2008: 8:13:53 WalesA close run thing in Roth! Before the race, we believe the Welsh record was 8:44:17 (Richard Jones, Ironman Austria 2005), and there were two Welshmen going for that on Sunday. Despite allegedly being retired for three years (!), Richard Jones crossed the line in 8:43:12 to set new figures, and not far behind him, Hywel Davies recorded 8:44:34 to come very close to the old mark too. ScotlandHow quickly things change! This time last week, Bella Bayliss had the fastest two British Ironman times, having beaten her own PB in recording 8:50:13 in Klagenfurt. A week later, and not only has Chrissie smashed the British record, but Cat Morrison has taken over the Scottish record too - her 8:48:11 places her sixth on the all-time list, all in her first attempt at the distance. Still, Bella is the only female athlete to have two finishes in the all-time top-10... We think he already held the record anyway (8:35:09, Ironman Austria 2008), but we're absolutely certain that Graeme Stewart is certainly the Scottish Iron-distance record holder now after a stunning 8:23:29 in Roth. He even beat Chrissie! IrelandWe're not aware of any improvements yesterday, though we are fairly certain - though happy to be corrected - that Lian Dolan's 9:02:48 last week in Klagenfurt is the new Irish benchmark, overtaking the figures of Paul O'Doherty (9:08:37, Ironman Western Australia 2008).Have we missed any? Please do let us know if we have! ![]()
