9 Standard distance medals for the GB Age-Group team in Lausanne

As with Saturday’s Sprint distance race at the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Lausanne, the Age-Group Standard Distance Triathlon World Champs featured some impressive numbers; 1976 entries, 44 nations and 276 British entries.

Here’s the roundup on the British team, who matched the five Gold medals of USA and Germany, winning a total of nine medals (10.8% of the 83 issued), having provided 14% of the entries. 16 different nations featured on the Standard Distance Age-Group podium, which along with the participation date makes this surely one of the most ‘global’ Age-Group championship events of recent years – which is very refreshing to see.

Sarah Barrett (70-74) retained her title from Gold Coast 12 months ago – and she also won in 2017 (Rotterdam), 2016 (Cozumel) and 2013 (London), her first World Championship Gold coming 12 years ago in Hamburg. That’s a very impressive record.

Oliver Crossley (25-29) and Gwen Kinsey (45-49) were the fastest British Male and Female athletes respectively, both taking Gold medals in the process – and both were also European Championship winners this year in Weert.

The second fastest Brit (and Gold medal winner in 40-44) was Donald Brooks, who also won two years ago in Rotterdam, while the evergreen Daphne Belt added another Gold to her record in the 80-84 category, having last one Gold in Chicago four years ago.

Edward Castro (30-34) won double Gold in Australia last year and took Silver this year. After Gold yesterday in the Sprint, Barbara Holmes (60-64) add Bronze – and next weekend she’ll be racing in the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship too.
